NUFC star slated & given 2/10 rating as ‘unforgivable’ display leads to shock international defeat

DeAndre Yedlin was brilliant on his return to the Newcastle United first team against Man Utd, but the right-back has been slated for his performance on international duty last night.

The USA slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat to Canada – their first for 34 years – and the NUFC right-back was heavily criticised throughout for his ‘terrible’ defending at the back post, failure to track back and poor crossing at the other end.

Several USMNT fans voiced their frustrations on social media (see comments below) for his part in Canada’s opening goal, while ESPN and NBC Sports gave him 2/10 and 3/10 in their post match player ratings.

After the game, ESPN said this about his performance after giving him a 2/10 in their player ratings piece:

DeAndre Yedlin, 2‘Rarely got to show his speed in pushing forward on the right flank, contributing to the U.S.’s struggles going forward.

Also failed to get back on the Davies goal and had his fair share of lost balls‘”

It didn’t get much better from NBC Sports either, who gave him a 3/10 while criticising his ‘unforgivable lack of attention and intensity’ in the build up to Canada’s first goal:

Another unforgivable lack of attention and intensity on a conceded goal at the back post from Yedlin. Really, really poor.

He has a tendency to switch off and is not a natural defender, often relying on his pace and athleticism to get him out of sticky situations.

Let’s hope he can put this stinker behind him and get back to the form that helped us keep Man Utd quiet at St James’ Park last time out.

  1. Newcastle have 3 centre halfs who defend so Yedlins job is to get up and down the wing, the USA seem to think he is a full back PPFFF!
