Charlie Nicholas predicts Chelsea vs Newcastle – “This is everybody’s banker, but…”

Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas believes Chelsea to beat Newcastle is ‘everybody’s banker’ this weekend – but warns the Blues that Bruce has defied the odds more than once this season.

Chelsea are heavy favourites ahead of tomorrow’s 3pm kick off at Stamford Bridge, with the bookies having Man City (away at Palace) as the only other team more likely to win in the Premier League this weekend.

That said, our 1-0 wins over Spurs and Manchester United have suggested that we’re not to be underestimated – especially when up against any of the league’s ‘big six’.

Here’s what Nicholas has had to say, backing Chelsea to win narrowly in what he expects to be a ‘tight’ game:

“This is everybody’s banker of the weekend, but Newcastle have gone to Tottenham and won, which people questioned. They then beat Manchester United at home but it wasn’t sensational. Steve Bruce will be saying that this is a free swing.

“Chelsea have the youngsters and are playing well, but they will have a roller coaster season, which is what I said from the start. These are the games that it took Liverpool years to overcome – these teams sit in and don’t threaten, but try to frustrate.

“Newcastle do this and they did it at Tottenham, this is the type of team they are. Chelsea will get there, but I don’t see them dominating unless they score in the first 10 minutes – I see it being tight.”

CHARLIE PREDICTS: 2-1

I’d tend to agree with the last paragraph.

If Chelsea score early and their young player’s tails go up, you’d fear we’ll be in for a long afternoon – not that I expect us to be anywhere near as bad as we were in that 5-0 stuffing at Leicester last month.

Their defence is vulnerable, however, so I’ll always fancy our chances of scoring a goal and nicking a result should we stay solid at the other end.
