Key update on Martin Dubravka’s future reported as Juventus & PSG interest resurfaces

Over a month on from Martin Dubravka stating he was “very close” to signing a new deal at St James’ Park, The Athletic have shared a much needed update on his future.

Chris Waugh’s piece reveals that reported interest from Juventus and PSG has resurfaced in recently, however he states that the Slovakian stopper is “almost certain to accept fresh terms” offered by the club, suggesting a new deal for the club’s number one still looks imminent.

That said, it’s a contract extension the club would be wise to wrap up ASAP, with Waugh insisting that we leave ourselves vulnerable to January interest until he officially puts pen to paper.

Here’s a snippet from The Athletic’s latest piece on Newcastle’s no.1:

Newcastle are so keen to tie the 30-year-old down to a new deal, even if he is already contracted through until 2022. Rumours of interest from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have surfaced in recent months but, while there has been tentative interest, firm offers have yet to follow.

Regardless, discussions with the club’s hierarchy have been continuing for months. Dubravka himself insisted he was “very close” to signing a new deal — one that would reportedly put him among Newcastle’s highest earners — last month but confirmation is yet to arrive.

Sources insist he is almost certain to accept fresh terms in time but, until he does, the possibility of the goalkeeper being poached will remain.

The 30-year-old has been criticised at times this season, but his importance to this team was clear on Saturday, with him making several key saves to keep the score at 0-0 before Alonso’s eventual winner.

He’s impressed so much that third choice goalkeeper Rob Elliot had this to say about him, claiming he’s taken goalkeeping to ‘another level’ at NUFC and fully deserves to be the club’s no.1:

“He’s taken goalkeeping here to another level. Martin is a top, top guy. He deserves everything he’s got. Selfishly, you want to to be able to put yourself into the selection picture but Martin deserves the jersey. No doubt.”

Hopefully we see an official announcement come out soon to confirm he’s signed a new deal.
