The Shields Gazette’s Liam Kennedy believes Jonjo Shelvey will sign for West Ham ‘one day’, claiming their interest in the Newcastle midfielder ‘never seems to go away’.
This comes after his impressive display at the London Stadium last Saturday, seeing him play a part in our opening two goals and score our third via a 30-yard free-kick.
Ironically, he downed the side he’s been tipped to join for several years on Saturday, and Kennedy’s latest comments suggest he’ll end up their one day – although suggestions he could join them next summer seem bizarre when he’s said to be ‘close’ to signing a new deal.
Nevertheless, here’s what he’s had to say during his latest piece for the Shields Gazette:
“West Ham, his club, never seem to go away.”
“I think he will end up there one day but January could well prove a little too soon.
“The summer is more likely.”
For all the talk of a potential exit and move to boyhood club West Ham, Shelvey has always seemed eager to remain at St James’ Park, even when he’s been out of the side and forced to fight for his place.
That said, he’s one of our highest earners and must be much more consistent if he’s to earn a regular place in our first-team ahead of promising young players in Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff and Matty Longstaff.
He’s brilliant on his day, as we saw at West Ham, but has been the sort of player who gives you a 9/10 performance one week, and a whole host of 4’s and 5’s after that – and that’s not enough when the Hayden’s and Longstaff’s regularly give you 7’s both on and off the ball.
Would you be happy to see Jonjo Shelvey sign a new deal and commit to the club, or do you feel a move to West Ham would suit all parties?
