According to reports in Turkey, Newcastle are one of four Premier League clubs eyeing a January move for Besiktas star Domagoj Vida.
This comes from Turkish outlet Takvim, who claim we’re prepared to pay €10m (£8.5m) after joining Brighton, West Ham and Norwich in the race to sign the Croatian international.
To say this latest transfer link should be taken with a pinch of salt is an understatement.
The rugged centre-back was outstanding in the 2018 World Cup, playing a big part in Croatia’s run to the final, however there’s several reasons why this one feels highly unlikely.
Firstly, the last area we need to strengthen in January is at centre-back, with us having SIX capable options in Schar, Lascelles, Lejeune, Fernandez, Dummett and Clark.
Jamaal Lascelles may be out injured until the new year, but I don’t see us signing a centre-back in the new year – especially not a 30-year-old who won’t come particularly cheap.
