Report reveals the NUFC player Bruce “would have kept” if he got the job sooner

The Chronicle claim that Steve Bruce would have kept Mo Diame at the club had he got the job sooner over the summer.

Diame’s contract expired in July, allowing him to sign a lucrative deal with Qatari side Al Ahli instead – however it seems Bruce would’ve pushed to keep the former Senegalese international at the club should he have got the job sooner.

Bruce worked with the midfielder during his time at Hull and was linked with a move to sign him during his stint at Sheffield Wednesday.

Ironically, the NUFC boss is on the lookout for a new defensive midfielder in January as a result of Diame’s exit, with the Chronicle confirming that Granit Xhaka and Ibrahima Sissoko we’re tracking.

Links with the Strasbourg midfielder have faded after claims we were edging close to a January agreement, however Mark Douglas claims that Bruce sees Xhaka as a “ideal and ready-made fit”, suggesting he is our top target in that area heading into the new year.

Whether a loan deal can be agreed for the 27-year-old remains to be seen, with him on big wages and receiving interest from clubs in Italy and Germany, however it looks like we’ll be signing a combative midfielder in January whatever happens.

Do you feel we made a mistake letting Diame go or is it time we moved on and signed his long-term replacement?
