NUFC player ranked best in his position outside the ‘top 6’ based on these outstanding stats

Federico Fernandez has been one of the best Premier League defenders when he’s played this season according to the stats.

With an average off 11.67 blocks and clearances per 90 minutes, he’s ranked above every defender outside the ‘big six’, including the likes of England’s Tyrone Mings, Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu & Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake to name a few.

The statistics (see below) come from ‘The Other 14” – a Twitter page which focuses on the club’s outside the league’s ‘big six’ – and emphasise just how solid the Argentine has been when he’s played this season:

As you can see, Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles also feature in the ‘top 20’, epitomising how strong we’ve been defensively at times this term.

Back to Fernandez, he really has been a revelation and unsung hero since coming into the Newcastle backline, with his performances highlighting our need to hand him a contract extension before his current deal expires next summer.

Although the former Swansea skipper has only started 3 games since coming into the side, his average of 11.67 blocks and clearances per game are hugely impressive.

Not only that, the 6ft 3′ centre-back has bagged assists in the 1-1 draw with Wolves and 2-1 win over Bournemouth, also scoring in our 3-2 win over West Ham, showing just how influential he’s been over the past month.

With Schar and Lejeune fit again, Dummett reliable and Clark in great form, Steve Bruce will have a positive dilemma to face when selecting his three centre-backs over the coming weeks!
