Must-read for NUFC fans as Saint-Maximin gives brilliant interview on BBC Newcastle

Allan Saint-Maximin really is the gift that keeps on giving – both on and off the football field!

This time, the exciting winger has got involved with our local radio station, speaking to the guys at BBC Radio Newcastle on Thursday night.

Here’s a round-up of what the young Frenchman had to say during his chat on Total Sport last night (watch it in full here):

ASM on the city and north-east weather:

“The weather is not the same as Nice! I like the city; it’s a small city but you have everything here.

“I prefer to be in Newcastle with a lot of fans in the stadium because it’s my job to play football.”

ASM on his failure to score so far

“I have a lot of opportunities to score. For this, I’m really happy.

“When you are a striker and you have no opportunity to score, you can be really angry. You just have to keep going.

“If the team wins, and I don’t score, I’m happy.”

ASM on his preferred position:

“I prefer to play on the left (than the right), but my best position is number ten, because I am more free and can go anywhere.”

ASM on his visit to the Newcastle Foodbank:

“Sometimes, life is difficult, and you have to work again and again and again.

“Me, I have a good position now, but I know some people cannot buy some things, and for this, I like to go here.

I remember about my life before.”

ASM on meeting young Newcastle fans:

“I enjoy it when I see the kids with a big smile! I love it, because I feel like I do good things – it’s not only about playing, money – it’s like I give a smile, and this is really important.

“I know sometimes I am an example (to others).”

ASM on his interactions with fans on Twitter:

“I like Twitter.

“Before, a lot of people said ‘what are you doing? Don’t speak with fans! When you play bad, they kill you.’

“If, sometimes, I can talk with a fan, and they feel they can speak with me, I’m happy.”

ASM on St James’ Park:

“At St James’ Park, I feel a lot of things.

Before I came, I talked to my trainer in Nice, Patrick Vieira. He said to me the fans were crazy!”

ASM on his closest friends in the NUFC squad:

“I like Willems but I like everybody.

“I like Jonjo, I like Andy. I stay a lot with Willems because we came at the same time.

“They are (all) really good guys.”

ASM on ex-Mag Hatem Ben Arfa:

ASM on his biggest inspirations:

“My biggest inspiration, when I was young, was Robinho.

Now, I don’t have a player I love, an example (to follow).

I look at every sport… I like Mayweather, I like Nadal.”

ASM on his love of skill:

“Sometimes, the (opposing) player is tired and they don’t think about nutmeg – but I always think about think this!

“I am not tired of nutmegs!”
