Mention the name Joselu to most Newcastle fans, and it’s fair to say you won’t get many postive responses.
The Spanish striker was sold to newly promoted La Liga side Aalves last summer after a disappointing two years with us, but he’s doing the business for his new club!
Joselu scored twice in the final 5 minutes on Sunday night to give his Alaves side a 0-2 win at Eibar – their local rivals – who of course are Florian Lejeune’s former employers.
He was handed the Man of the match award and now has SIX goals in 12 starts this season. Watch his two well takens finishes here:
That tally is not only 2 more than he managed in any league season for us, but has taken him ahead of Barca’s Antoine Griezemann in the 2019/20 goalscoring charts, and just 1 behind Luis Suarez and 2 behind Messi!
It’s an astonishing turn around for a player who always gave his all in a Newcastle shirt, and who seemed a decent family man, but was always hindered by his limited ability.
He arrived in the summer of 2017 from Stoke for £5m to not much fanfare, and he only managed 6 goals in 46 appearances, albeit 3 of them coming against Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool.
He’s already matched that in 13 games for his new employers and appears settled at the Basque club.
Despite his forgettable spell at Newcastle, it’s nice to see him doing well. If Joelinton scores 6 goals in the next 13 games I think we’ll all be delighted!
