Bruce claims rarely used NUFC player “could be our answer” – despite 22 mins of action all season

Steve Bruce has talked up Dwight Gayle once again this week, claiming the striker “could be our answer” in the final third this season.

The NUFC boss has made no secret of the fact he’s tried to sign the 29-year-old during his time in the Championship, yet has handed him just 22 minutes of football over the past six weeks.

That said, Bruce hints that he’ll still have his part to play this season, insisting that the former no.0 is a ‘goal scorer’.

Listen to his chat with BBC Radio Newcastle’s Matthew Rasibeck below:

Gayle is a natural finisher, yet I’m not sure he’s touched the ball more than five times during his last few late cameos.

He was visibly frustrated by the lack of service after brief appearances at Chelsea and Villa just this week, but this is the issue – he totally relies on the right system, creative players and his teammates putting the ball into good areas for him, and we don’t do that.

He could have his part to play, but I see him being even more ineffective than Joelinton if our lack of support or service up to the striker continues to be so poor.
