Newcastle leading the race to sign ‘the next Jamie Vardy’ – Report

According to an ‘exclusive’ from talkSPORT, Newcastle United are leading the race for Charlton striker Macauley Bonne.

Bonne completed a £200,000 move to The Valley over the summer after bagging 46 goals in two seasons for Leyton Orient – and his immediate impact in the Championship have helped back up claims he could be ‘the next Jamie Vardy’.

He’s bagged 6 goals and an assist in 12 Championship starts this season, seeing him attract alleged interest from ourselves, Leicester and Fulham.

TalkSPORT claim we are ‘slightly ahead’ in the race to sign him too, with the player believing he would be more likely to get first-team football at St James’ Park.

For what it’s worth, the 24-year-old was linked with a move to St James’ Park this time last year, with The Sun reporting in December 2018 that we were eyeing a £500,000 bid for the striker.

He may cost considerably more now he’s beginning to prove himself in the second tier, however a cut-price deal for an unproven yet exciting young striker could be one that appeals to Mike Ashley.

It would be a risk and one that could backfire – especially when proven goal scorers seems essential after Joelinton’s struggles – but there might be something in this.

One to watch in January? Here’s him in action:
