Michael Owen predicts Newcastle vs Crystal Palace – & reveals alarming stat in the process..

Michael Owen has released his prediction ahead of Saturday’s game at St James’ Park, backing the match to end all square at 1-1.

One alarming statistic revealed by the former NUFC striker is the fact we’ve failed to have a single shot on target in THREE games this season, with us doing so in that dismal 1-0 defeat at Burnley last weekend.

He’s expecting us to find the net against a injury-riddled Palace side this weekend, but believes their impressive form on the road will see them come away with a point.

Here’s what he’s had to say during his latest piece for Bet Victor:

Both sides are struggling for goals and Newcastle failed to have a shot on target for the third time this season at Turf Moor last weekend.

‘The Magpies are a different proposition at St James’ Park, however, although I think they may have to settle for a point against a Palace side who are, arguably, better away from home and came from behind to get a point at home to Brighton on Monday.’

Prediction: Newcastle 1-1 Crystal Palace

I don’t think many would take a point heading into this one, however his pre-match assessment is pretty hard to disagree with here.

If we had Saint-Maximin fit I’d be hopeful we could make the most of their injuries at the back – with Ward, Cahill, Sakho and Van Anholt all out – but we’ll be light on creativity at the other end if Almiron and Shelvey miss out again.

Hopefully we can dig in and show that fighting spirit that got us big wins against Bournemouth and Southampton at St James’ Park, however I wouldn’t be surprised if this one does end all square.

How do you see things panning out when Palace come to town on Saturday?

  1. How is it that some days we’ve got the Longstaffs, Shelvey, Schar and Fernandez banging shots at goal from 30 yards and other times we don’t have a single shot on goal?

We’ve seen that Sean Longstaff and Shelvey can hit a ball and cause problems for the keeper and when you are cracking them from 25-30 yards the opportunities are there even against the best teams.

Considering how easily we give the ball away (30% possession) with our horrendous passing, combined with how many times our forays come to nothing I can’t understand why Bruce isn’t telling the boys to have a crack from outside the box more. Given their abilities Shelvey and Longstaff should be told they have to aim for 5 shots each per game from outside the box, and even Schar and Fernandez should maybe have 3 each.

Put Carroll and Gayle in the box to draw fire then every now and again have a ping fropom long range. This is especially applicable when we have St. Maximin out.

Nothing gets the fans going more than a 30 yarder whizzing past the upright.

I can’t help thinking we’d get a better return than the 60 million a goal we’ve paid up to now.

You can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket!
