In-form NUFC player set to be victim of 2020 ‘overhaul’ – despite being “really happy” on Tyneside

Javier Manquillo is speaking like a man who wants to extend his stay at St James’ Park based on his latest interview, but it sounds like the club may have other plans.

The Spaniard has this week revealed how he’s “really happy” on Tyneside and is becoming more and more attached to the city, the stadium and the fans, however the Chronicle’s Mark Douglas has hinted that he’s unlikely to receive a “serious contract offer”.

This comes from his latest Q&A (read more here), which sees him address the 25-year-old’s future given his current deal is due to expire next summer, but he believes the right-back will be sacrificed by the club ahead of a squad ‘overhaul’ in 2020.

Nevertheless, here’s what Manquillo has had to say about life on Tyneside this week:

I’m really happy.

I think the longer you stay anywhere the more attached you become to a place.

I’ve been here quite a while, and I love the stadium, the fans, everything is fantastic.

I feel very much at ease.

Ever since my little boy was born, everything’s been going really great – phenomenally.

I decided at the time I’m happy here, and with the fact I’m so settled here, there was no doubt at any moment that we would have the birth here in Newcastle.

Everything went superbly well.

These comments really do feel bittersweet if Douglas’ latest claims do ring true.

Not only does he sound extremely happy and settled on Tyneside, he’s been arguably never played better during his time at the club, with him being one of our most consistent performers in our last four games.

Considering he’s still young and appears to be our best right-back on current form, would it be a mistake to sell in January or allow him to leave on a free next summer?
