Another day, another striker linked with a January move to Newcastle United – and the latest link is pretty damning.
We had potentially exciting loan moves for Olivier Giroud and Michy Basthuayi reported yesterday, but today the Guardians Ed Aarons claims we’re now eyeing 36-year-old Brighton striker Glenn Murray.
Aarons claims both ourselves and Aston Villa – who are also in dire need of a striker after Wesley was ruled out for the season – are ‘looking at a six-month deal’ for the veteran.
Considering Bruce stated a few days ago that he won’t bring in signing ‘for the sake of it’ and instead wanted real quality who’d improve us, this one is pretty baffling – even if we are desperate for goals and another option up top.
Murray may be a poacher, managing to score 30 goals over the past few seasons in a poor Brighton side, but Bruce would be incredibly naive to think he would work in this system.
We rely on our striker being mobile, able to hold the ball, work hard and then get in the box after doing all of the above, where as Murray is a striker who relies on good service in and around the box.
Murray scored 15 in 2017/18 and 14 in 2018/19, but has managed just once goal in 14 appearances under Graham Potter this season.
This new link has come from a relatively reputable journalist in Ed Aarons (The Guardian’s editor), but I really do hope this story is a load of rubbish.
