NUFC player on “more than £50k-a-week” wants to quit… but refuses to take a pay cut – Report

Dwight Gayle is ‘keen to quit’ Newcastle United this month according to north-east reporter Luke Edwards.

His ‘exclusive’ on all things NUFC reveals that Gayle earns ‘more than £50,000-a week’ and claims the striker is keen to leave the club – but is NOT willing to take a pay cut to do so.

Here’s a snippet from The Telegraph’s latest piece on the former NUFC no.9’s future:

Newcastle have drawn up a list of transfer targets in both midfield and attack, but Bruce is adamant he will not make signings just for the sake of it and will only agree to a player if he thinks they will genuinely improve the team.

That means he has also resisted any temptation to let Gayle leave this month, despite interest from a host of Championship clubs who want to sign him on loan.  Gayle is understood to be keen to quit Newcastle but is not willing to take a pay cut to do so. He currently earns more than £50,000-a-week at St James’ Park.

With Gayle starting just ONE game all season and turning 30 this year, you can see why he wants out, however it feels like any January exit will be anything but straightforward – no matter how many Championship clubs are keen to take him.

Not only will any second tier side struggle to pay his ‘£50k plus’ wage demands, making even a loan deal difficult, it’s reported that we’re holding out for £15m.

I’m sure just about every promotion chasing side would love to snap him up this month, but the 29-year-old may have to reduce his wage demands (and we may have to reduce our asking price) if we wish to cash in and sign another striker.

Some may want to see Gayle get a run in the side after Joelinton’s woes continued over the weekend, but with him failing to get into the game and missing TWO huge chances at Burnley and Man Utd, is he really the answer at this level?

If his sale allowed us to sign a more dynamic striker that fitted our system, I’d cash in.
