Keith Downie hints at striker blow for Steve Bruce – “He’s probably not going to Newcastle.”

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reports that Olivier Giroud is unlikely to sign for Newcastle United this month – despite being told he can leave Chelsea.

The north-east reporter insists it’s early days as far as the January transfer window is concerned, but reveals that we have ‘knocked on a lot of doors but aren’t getting answers’ so far in our search for a new striker.

Giroud seems to be a prime example. He’s barely been used at Chelsea and could fill one of our domestic loan slots perfectly – being an experienced Premier League striker who’s capable of leading the line on his own – however it seems like he may have better offers.

Here’s what Downie’s had to say on Sky Sports News when discussing our striker search:

“Giroud’s going to have his pick of teams now he’s been told he can leave.

He’s probably not going to Newcastle.

“In terms of the striker hunt, it feels very much like the early days of the transfer window.

“Newcastle are knocking & not getting answers.”

Michy Batshuayi is also mentioned, as is AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek, however it seems like the latter could yet stay at the San Siro if his manager’s latest comments are anything to go by.

It feels like we’re in poll position to sign another winger in Ademola Lookman, but our striker search was never going to be easy at this time of the year.

Either clubs don’t want to sell in the middle of the season (or ask for inflated fees if they do), or you face huge competition from rival clubs when desirable loan deals become available.
