According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle are now pursuing PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo.
The Dutch U-21 international is also said to be on Lyon’s radar, but reports in France claim we will rival the Ligue 1 side for the 20-year-old’s signature this month.
Foot Mercato also state that Gakpo is valued at €10m (£8.5m) and that we have the ‘financial resources’ to complete a deal – suggesting we’d be prepared to match PSV’s alleged asking price.
Gakpo stands 6ft 2′ tall and is a versatile attacker, predominantly playing as a left-winger but also being able to operate as a central striker or right-winger.
He’s bagged 5 goals and 8 assists in 31 games in all competitions this season for PSV, including 4 goals and 6 assists in 18 Eredivisie appearances for the Dutch giants.
His age, price and potential suggests he’s just the sort of player we’d be looking at this month, but is someone so young, inexperienced and unproven what we really need?
He could be a good bit of business at £8.5 (presuming these rumours are true), however we need players for today – not a talent who could take time to settle from a relatively weak Dutch league.
Here’s him in action:
