The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas claims there’s a potentially exciting ‘mystery deal‘ being worked on behind the scenes at Newcastle United.
In his latest report following Saturday night’s 1-0 win at St James’ Park, he reveals that the club have a “big target” they’re working on that’s yet to be made public – suggesting a surprise signing could be in the offing.
Elsewhere, he also reveals what Steve Bruce told him when he asked about the potential arrival of Valentino Lazaro, saying: “it was Sky Italia, that one wasn’t it? I’m pleased you didn’t get it.”
Here’s what he’s had to say during his latest piece on the transfer front:
Bruce joked with a twinkle in his eye when I asked him in the post-match press conference about Lazaro that “it was Sky Italia, that one wasn’t it? I’m pleased you didn’t get it.”
The club have a big target that hasn’t emerged yet and Bruce would clearly relish getting one of his game changers close to completion and handing supporters a pleasant January surprise.
We’ve heard this before of course and Newcastle hierarchy need to make the most of the less confrontational approach of Bruce to transfers.
Considering Bruce has generally been tight lipped when names have been put to him by the press this month, his response here to the Lazaro rumours suggests this one may be close.
After all, he references Sky Italia – the outlet that reported on Saturday lunch time that Lazaro’s agent was on Tyneside to discuss personal terms and put the final touches on the Austrian’s proposed move to St James’ Park.
As for this ‘mystery target’, it would be nice to know the ‘big’ deal the club are trying to pull off – although sometimes they best (and most likely) transfers are the ones that slip through the back door without being linked once.
With Gayle injured (again), Carroll struggling to stay fit and Joelinton needing someone to take some of the weight off his shoulders, let’s hope it’s a striker!
