Everton (A): Pre-match thoughts, team news & predicted line ups

A tough game awaits on Merseyside on Tuesday night, but results in our last three send us into this one in good spirits.

The hard fought draw at Wolves and convincing FA Cup win over Rochdale was a solid response to some dismal form over the festive period, yet things got even better on Saturday, with an outstanding defensive display and last minute winner from Isaac Hayden handing us an unlikely 1-0 win over Chelsea.

It wasn’t great to watch at times, but we’re now closer to 5th than we are to the drop zone – a stat which sums up how well Steve Bruce has done so far (no matter how ‘lucky’ we’ve been).

There’ll be a few tired an sore players in our ranks, meaning Bruce will have to pick his team carefully ahead of our second game in 4 days, but Everton have their own fitness worries, with key man Richarlison ruled out for the hosts.

Losing Willems and Dummett for the season is a real blow and one that takes the gloss of our weekend win, however it looks like we may be boosted by the arrival of Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazara this week.

Predicted XI

We put in a massive shift to beat Chelsea over the weekend, with us spending 70% of the game chasing the ball, so Bruce might have to protect a few players who’ve only just returned.

Can Saint-Maximin and Lascelles start again just a few days after a tough 90 minutes? Can Ritchie play again after 80 minutes on Saturday?

At the back, I can see Bruce sticking with the same three centre-backs – although we have Schar and Lejeune fit and available if he feels the need to protect Lascelles.

At left wing-back, Ritchie seems the only option now Willems is out for the season. The latest training pictures suggest both Yedlin and Manquillo still aren’t fit to play, so it could be between Hayden and Krafth at right wing-back.

I’d personally go with Hayden at right wing-back and partner the energetic Matty Longstaff next to Jonjo Shelvey in midfield – although Sean Longstaff could return given how leggy Shelvey looked late on against Chelsea.

In attack, can Saint-Maximin really start again? He played 90 minutes against Chelsea, so I’d question whether he can go again little over 48 hours later based on his recent hamstring history.

The issue is, Carroll, Gayle and Muto all look set to miss out again, so the only other option is Christian Atsu – and he’s a significant downgrade on the dynamic Frenchman.

Preferred NUFC XI – (5-2-2-1) – Dubravka – Hayden, Fernandez, Lascelles Clark, Ritchie – M Longstaff, Shelvey – Almiron, Saint-Maximin – Joelinton.

The Opposition

Here’s ‘ones to watch’ in Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton side:

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – The big striker is a real handful and good in the air, but he’s added goals to his game so far this season, scoring 9 in 21 league appearances. The main man to watch our for in Richarlison’s absence.

Yerry Mina – The 6ft 5′ centre-back is an impressive ball player for his size and VERY dangerous from set pieces.

Jordan Pickford – There’s not much in between with the former Mackem stopper. He’ll receive plenty abuse from the away end, so it’ll be interesting to see if he keeps his cool this time. A capable goalkeeper but never far away from a rush of blood and big error.

Djibril Sidibe – A powerful right-back who’s weighed in with 5 assists in 17 appearances this season.

Predicted Everton XI – (4-4-2) Pickford – Sidibe, Holgate, Mina, Digne – Walcott, Davies, Delph, Bernard – Kean, Calvert-Lewin.

Team news

Jetro Willems and Paul Dummett will both miss out after being ruled out for the season, while Bruce suggested that the game will also come too soon for Andy Carroll.

Dwight Gaye is still missing and the likes of Manquillo, Yedlin, Ki and Muto are all expected to be sidlined again after missing training.

For the hosts, Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Alex Iwobi have been ruled out, while Michael Keane is also a doubt.

Prediction

With several players likely to be knackered after Saturday’s hard fought win and Bruce hardly able rotate given our injury issues, I fear we’ll be a little jaded coming into this one.

Everton could struggle with a few of their key attackers out (Richarlison could be a big miss!), but I think they’ll edge a low scoring affair.

Hopefully Bruce’s battlers prove me wrong, however. After what happened last weekend, it wouldn’t surprise me if they did!

Prediction: Everton 1-0 Newcastle

  1. Is anybody really scared by that Everton midfield? As long as the Ref keeps an eye on Delph, I am not. In attack Kean has had a slow start. Calvert-Lewin looks like one of those players who go on streaks and he is due a drought.

Then there is the giant arsed Mackem. A mistake waiting to happen. And it will, and it will be in an important England game. But before that he needs to be harassed and berated by NUFC fans. We know he is not the brightest bulb and may forget that he is supposed to remain calm this time.

  2. Listening to the Guardian Podcast and one of the guests said “Pickford has a sense of his own celebrity”. Saying Pickford thinks he is the most important player on the field and saying he was flapping on the weekend. Not sure he can flap that hard with those t-rex arms. The consensus was that Pope is better.

I am not even sold on his distribution. The praise for it has gone to his head. There are very few times when a goalie will provide a direct or even indirect assist and Pickford tries it all of the time (the one to Salah was rare yesterday, probably the only one this season for them). It ends up more time in the crowd than at an Everton players feet.

We should try and ruffle him again.

  3. Not on cable US TV. There is a little game between Chelsea and Arsenal on instead. May have to get on the phone to the doc and renew my prosac prescription as I will be listening to Jon “for me, he could have done much better there” Ando. At least for the 1st 20 minutes until he drives me mad with, or without, mothers’ little helper.

  4. Stat attack for Chelsea game:

Jorginho completed 17 more passes than the entire midfield 4 of NUFC plus Joelinton.

Chelsea had 19 shots, NUFC 7.

After 90 mins Chelsea completed 20 passes. NUFC completed 1. The one for the goal. Hooray!!!

  5. Eric – my biggest fear going into any game now isn’t the opposition, it’s injuries!!
There’s not many positions left now where we can afford to pick up an injury.

But that’s far from a scary looking Everton side. When you consider how much they have spent – and you factor in that Holgate, Davies & DCL is from they youth set up – they either have a lot of injuries too or have spent big on average players.

I fancy us to get something from this one. I’d be happy sticking another point on the board at least – I’d take no more injuries though ??????

  6. Sharpy: yeah, we are down to bare bones as football managers like to say. Who could have predicted Dwight Gayle and Andy Carroll injuries, eh 🙂 The good news is that the loan players appear decent from what I have read – never seen either of them play and don’t trust youtube.

What I was saying about Delph is that he is a dirty b-stard and the Refs let him get away with it. I have no idea why. Was the same with Ashley Young who should have had a couple of red cards a season and always got away with a yellow for his diving in, studs up lunges. That was probably Man U bias. But Delph, there should be no excuse.

If I was a Ref I would send Delph off as a precaution for what he MIGHT do or a make-up call for all the fouls he has got away with in the past.

  8. Been listening to some podcasts and they mainly have middle class journalists on who are pleasant and know their stuff. Then watched a highlights show of weekend matches. The one thing I noticed is how many of these people cannot pronounce their “r”s. There is even a word for it – rotocism. Why doesn’t somebody sit down with them when they are a kid and say it is R not W? It seems simple to me. It doesn’t really annoy me it is just something I have noticed.

It is a British thing as well. I have lived in the USA for 30 years and NEVER once have I heard a Yank mispronounce their Rs in this way. Very strange and very strange that there are so many football writers and commentators with this speech impediment.

  9. It has only been a day since Liverpool outplayed Man U. I got to thinking how it got to this, how Liverpool are SO much better. It can’t just be Ferguson, can it? Then I thought how the mighty have fallen. All of these ex-Man U players try to spin it and paper over the cracks. But have a look at the Man U 2008/9 team and tell me that there is not something seriously wrong at that club now:

    Van der Sar
    GNev
    Ferdinand
    Vukic
    Evra
    Scholes
    Giggs
    Rooney
    Tevez
    Berbatov
    Ronaldo

    BENCH

    Ben Foster
    Silvestre
    Fletcher
    Carrick
    Hargreaves
    Nani
    Saha

  10. I think I left out Roy Keane 🙂 Seriously apart from Henry and Viera at Arsenal, that Man U lineup is probably the whole team of that decade. Look at them now, scratching around pretending Martial is a striker and McGuire is their star player. That is without even mentioning JLingz adnd his zero goals and zero assists in 2019.

  11. On Bowen, some people might think £20m is a lot on a Championship player but when you look at what we are asking for Galye who is in the same contract situation as Bowen it does stink of hypocrisy. Gayle is a Championship player too. But it looks like Bowen has done more than Maddison ever did at that level before being bought for £22m.

However, I really don’t think a winger should be our priority this window. We need a striker and splashing £20m on Bowen would leave us virtually nowt to spend on a striker. So on this occasion I agree with the club. Revisit it in the summer when we have more money as obviously Jabba isn’t lending the club anything to bring forward summer signings.

Stu – I agree that a striker should absolutely be the main focus based on Joelintons lack of goals and Carroll, Gayle and Muto all being injured – and even when fit, they aren’t going to score many between them either.
But it depends on who is available this window – not many clubs are willing to let their goal scorers go in January.

I’m happy to wait for Bowen in the summer, but wouldn’t see it as a bad move if we can and do get him now. I think he will bring goals too, both scoring and creating.

I’d hope it wouldn’t take him long to settle into the team having played for Bruce before. It would be how he handled the step up in class from the championship to PL.

But – I look at the Sheff Utd players, some of the Villa players – Grealish in particular and a player I wanted at NUFC, Neal Maupay at Brighton have all coped with the step up just fine.

£20m isn’t expensive for a young English player, and a few decent seasons could see that value increase – which from Ashley’s point of view is box ticked.

  13. I watched the WBA v Stoke game last night and while it wasn’t the best game – the goal scorer is a player I think we should sign.

Tyrese Campbell (son of former Arsenal & Everton forward Kevin Campbell). He’s only 20yr old and his contract with Stoke expires in the summer. If we go for him for free then it goes to tribunal and who knows what we pay then.
I’d offer £5m plus Sorensen for the rest of the season.

I know he’s not the established forward we need right now, but looking to the future – I think he’s a good player to bring in and with an ageing Gayle and Carroll – a young forward would be a good addition.

  14. SSN transfer talk – looking at Villas new signing:

‘I’d not really heard of this lad so decided to find out a bit more about him. He has 1.2m Instagram followers which I thought was a lot for a player I’d not really heard of’.

Where the hell do they get these nuggets from man?!?!!

  15. I think we would have a better chance of offering gayle instead of Sorenson. Sorenson can’t get a game anywhere at whatever level he’s been on loan at. he’s clearly missing something.

On Bowen we are probably at a points tally where we could take a risk on not buying a striker and spend it on Bowen and hope he chips in.

Stu – I’d be fine with sending Gayle, and they’d probably more likely to go with that as they are fighting relegation and he’d more likely get the goals to keep them up.

I agree with your Bowen comment too.

  17. Talk that Lazaros agent has held talks with RB Leipzig last night so his move to us could be in doubt.

Of course if he goes to Leipzig, that could mean that Lookman is no longer needed and we go after him instead – I’d be fine with that.

It could be we’ve stepped away from Lazaro, preferring Lookman – or it could be we are working on Bowen and these other 2 are option 2 to him.

  18. This Bentaleb deal looks like a free hit. An 850k loan fee is peanuts. He has been out for almost 2 years so it will take him a while to get up to speed, probably 5 games so we should judge him on the final 10 games of the season. I don’t see any way he starts any of the next 3. Or at least he shouldn’t.

We need Sean Longstaff to step up and show us that last year was for real.

I also think Bruce is handling Matty well. I don’t think he is ready to do a job fulltime. I see idiots on other blogs saying we should loan him out so he can get more game time. Are they mad? Shelvey is injury prone now. Sean is out of form. Ki is off. That leaves us Hayden and a new player who has been training with the reserves for 2 years.

We have been short in central midfield all year so the last thing we should be doing is loaning out our cover (Matty) who is either in the team or on the bench for most games. He’s the same age as Phil Foden and is getting a lot more playing time.

      (Quote)

  19. I despair of some of my fellow NUFC fans sometimes. A lot of them are always moaning and are just plain stupid. Bruce comes in and stops a planned loan of Matty Longstaff because he sees that he is ready to contribute to the first team. He later praises Matty as being the best player in practice and starts him against Man U, who we probably have the worst record against of any PL team. But these fools want to loan Matty out because we have loaned a player on a free hit who has hardly played in 2 years. As I said, I despair and I should stop reading the other blogs and The Chronic comments section.

Eric – Bentalab is a talent player mate, but he can be huffy and high maintenance – which is why Spurs and Schalke were/are happy to move him on.
Apparently he kept turning up late to training & refused to take German lessons. But he wanted to be back in the PL so who knows, maybe Bruceys man management can get the best out of him.

If he plays well the fans will get behind him and he could thrive on that. If not, it won’t go well coz all the fans want is a player giving their all.

But, for that money it’s very little risk really.

  23. Despite it not addressing the positions we need strengthening, I’m pleased with Bentalabs arrival – I think he has the quality to improve our squad – providing he keeps his head right and puts the effort in.

      (Quote)

  24. I am happy with the Bentelab deal, I just hope we don’t expect too much too soon. He has been out of the picture at Schalke and also had knee surgery. We have seen with Lejeune and Longstaff the Taller that it is not always straightforward when you come back from a major injury, and that is with the full support of the team, whereas Schlake seem to have just cut Bentaleb loose and said rot in the reserves.

      (Quote)

  25. I am happy with our points total and where we are in the league. Bruce has done a good job there but the football is dire. Now we have to press on. He has had had half a year to integrate the new players and see what we have, so we now have to get out of this ultra-defensive mindset. We actually have some attacking talent Steve. St Max and Shelvey will never be defenders so we have to play to their strengths. And no more of this BS about 6 transfer windows to make things work.

We cannot be scared of mid table teams and certainly cannot cede 60% possession to the bottom 5. Change your tactics when we play lesser teams. We do not play Liverpool every week. Everton are not Liverpool and I really hope we do not treat them like they are tonight.

  26. Brucie’s Delighted-O-Meter: only saw 1 “delighted” in Olly’s quotes of what Brucie said about the Bentaleb signing. Still time for more if we get a result at Everton. I am predicting it will be a 4 “delighted” day if we get something out of the game.

    </blockquote
Eric – the issue is that Rose sees himself as top 6 and would certainly demand top 6 wages – which I wouldn’t want to pay.

At LB I’d contact Man City and see if they would loan out Angelino. They have Mendy and Zinchenko both back fit, so may allow him to leave – if we put a recall clause into the deal.
Ritchie would still be first choice for me, so he could back up.

I’d even consider going with Aaron’s or Lazaar as back up to Ritchie.

I think our points tally would allow us to take a look at those 2 to decide whether to keep or cut loose in the summer.

      (Quote)

  29. Sharpy: I reckon Man City would want guaranteed playing time for Angelino. Rose would probably back himself to oust Ritchie at left back as he is a recent England International.

I totally disagree with Jamie Elliot’s latest piece on here saying we should loan out Matty Longstaff. It is totally a wrongheaded conclusion after saying we have been short in midfield all season and that Ki is on his way out and Shelvey is inconsistent and slow. He forgot to add that Sean has been out of form. His conclusion of loaning out Matty contradicts his premises. He should go and write for Ed. Matty is getting plenty of playing time at NUFC and Bentelab will take time to adjust. Jamie even went through Bentaleb’s injury and disciplinary record and the fact he has been ignored by Wagner so there is no guarantee he will hit the ground running. How he can then conclude we should loan out Longstaff the Shorter I have no idea.

      (Quote)

  30. Sharpy: the other thing about Rose is that if he is on Mourinho’s bad side he would probably jump at the chance to get away. Jose will sometimes let a player back in but you just know that most of the time when he makes up his mind he will be a pr1ck about it.

I don’t rate Rose that highly but he is a committed player on the pitch and is about our level.

      (Quote)

  31. Again, we are loaning a player who is coming back from a serious injury and who has hardly played for 2 years, being stuck in the reserves during that time. We have no idea what we are getting.

Backing Brucie’s man management skills is fine, BUT… how did that work out with Ben Arfa? I think he went missing for like 3 weeks at Hull and when Steve was asked about it he said he didn’t know where Bennie was.

      (Quote)

  32. Eric – it’s Roses wages that’s the big problem for me mate.

I think I’m coming to the conclusion that LB is well behind striker and RW.
Ritchie is there, Manquillo can cover LB (though I think he’d be my first choice RB based on his form this season), then there is Aaron’s or Lazaar behind them.
Not ideal I know, but would get us through this season and we could address it properly in the summer.

      (Quote)

  33. We are taking a risk on Bentaleb. Probably a worthwhile risk, but it should have no bearing on Matty Longstaff. It is more than likely that Shelvey will be out injured again or his big brother will not regain his form so we are going to need Matty.

      (Quote)

  34. The other thing about Matty Longstaff is that he doesn’t count against the 25 man squad number. 10 games at say Sheff Wed is hardly going to affect his development much when he will probably get 7 or 8 games here. Maybe 3 or 4 as a starter and some off the bench, but we need him so a loan is ridiculous.

      (Quote)

  35. Sorry if I am being a bit aggressive towards Jamie Elliot but I had already laid out my thoughts on Matty before Jamie’s piece was published. I am just being consistent because I had said other blogs were wrongheaded about loaning out Matty.

      (Quote)

  36. If I was Jabba I’d be trying to get Bale on loan. He’d sell a few more shirts and he’d only have his wages to pay for 6 months and he could get us a top ten finish which is worth about £5m in extra place prize money.

      (Quote)

  37. Eric – I agree about Matty. I think to have good cover in the squad you need 5 midfielders – that would be Shelvey, Hayden, Bentalab and the Longstaff boys for me. Everyone else can be moved on for me.

      (Quote)

  38. Stuart: You know Bale is on 500k Euros a week right? It’s not my money but that is quite a lot of Sports Direct mugs that Ashley would have to sell.

I’ll do the maths so you don’t have to. Bale for 5 months is 10 million Euros. Let’s say a SD Mug is 2 Euros. That’s 5 million SD Mugs Fatty would have to sell. That would be 1 to every person living in Scotland. Or every person in Newcastle (pop. 268,000) would have to buy 37 SD Mugs just for him to break even. And that is ignoring manufacturing and sales costs 🙂

      (Quote)

  39. Sharpy man, the 5 is without even considering Shelvey’s injury record, Sean’s lack of form and Bentelab’s time spent twiddling his thumbs in Shalke’s reserves. It is a no-brainer to keep Matty.

      (Quote)

  40. Eric , i agree about not loaning Matty out mate.
Lets hope Steve’s man management skills work on Bentaleb and what is it with us and signing previously crocked players( knee ) 🙄

As for tonight, a draw would be good .

      (Quote)

  41. So let’s say Fatty makes a profit of 1 Euro per SD mug. That would be 37 x 2 = 74 SD Mugs for every person living in Newcastle (268,000 remember). A family of 4 would then have 296 SD Mugs in their house if Fatty was to break even on Bale. Free advertising for Ashley. The Fat Man’s idea of heaven.

      (Quote)

  42. Actually, the Sports Direct mugs are quite colourful. You could have the kids arrange them in a stacked pyramid pattern in the corner of a room in December. Put an Angel on top and you would save on a Christmas tree. After about 10 years you would break even on the cost of the mugs.

So, I am with Stuart. Let’s get Gareth Bale in 🙂

      (Quote)

  43. There are many other benefits to teaching the kids to make a SD Mug Christmas tree. They would be off the Xbox and phone. They could learn valuable motor skills which would stand them in good stead for a future job at McDonalds. They could listen to their parents tell them how they used to make cardboard houses like they had on Blue Peter but they never came out the same as on TV.

Young Tom Allan looked lively against Rochdale though (I know it was only Rochdale) and May have some confidence from his Joelinton assist.

He wouldn’t be near the bench if we didn’t have as many injuries though.

  52. Which other clubs ever get 10/12 injuries, Sharpy?

But I have to say, Joelinton’s touch is possible the worst I’ve seen from a PL footballer.

  53. I can’t pretend to know what a professional footballer thinks but surely they can’t enjoy playing this way? Defending 70% of the game every game? Is that enjoyable…

  54. Essentially game over. Our game plan out of the window. How can we attack is the question and get back in to the game?

    Dubravka poor there too.

  55. I’m bored it’s turgid. I’m signing off until after the game as I really can’t be arsed watching this utter garbage.

  56. So, what’s your take on the 1st half Ando?

“To be fair, I thought the Richarlison hattrick was well taken and for me Mick McHoney should have done better with the second goal.

But Mick, what about the tactics and formations and the set ups? Isn’t that what you your are supposed to analyse, talk about, as an ermmmm… ANALYST?

“WHAT? I thought I was supposed to just be miserable for the whole game”.

  57. Stuart mate. It is a fcn dirge. I am glad we have the 29 points and probably wont go down but I don’t care that it is not on TV here today. I have even turned Radio Newcastle off. And not just for Ando.

Will probably pick it up for about 5 minutes in the 2nd half to see what is happening.

  58. What a s.hit first half… poor poor team… what’s really telling, not one other team anywhere has tried to buy anyone of our team. Not one… we are so sh.it nobody is willing to part with even a bag of crisps for our players. ??

  60. DT: but there were many teams in for our Manager 🙂

I have said to Stuart that I doubt Brucie will take us down this year but he will next if he stays.

I don’t mind Brucie as much as Pards or Ugly John. But the football is the same. Stabbing myself in the eye with a rusty nail would be more fun.

  61. You watch every single team we play against. They press on us like you wouldn’t believe. It’s because we’re fucking awful on the ball and the opposition know we will give it away.

  63. Game over ?????????

Turgid is a good word, festering is also a good word… festering turgid pile of camel dung … even that isn’t as bad as we are performing

  64. I just made myself chuckle. Steve Bruce asking his assistant who to bring on from the bench to change this game and I reckon Agnew pissed himself laughing too.

  65. Turned off the radio, stuff this for a lark, **** poor. Such a let down after such a good defensive display on saturday but this is what happens when you don’t have the fire power up front to get you back into a game. If we ship 2 goals we are effectively out the game.
