Alan Shearer picks NUFC trio in Premier League team of the week – but is one undeserved?

Alan Shearer has again chosen a strong Newcastle contingent in his Premier League team of the week – this time choosing 3 Mags after selecting Miguel Almiron and Martin Dubravka last time out.

Federico Fernandez, Ciaran Clark and goalscorer Isaac Hayden make the cut in Shearer’s selection this week, but are they all deserving of their place?

When Shearer shared his team onto social media yesterday, it immediately drew criticism amongst some of his followers, with many suggesting that there is a hint of black and white bias in his side.

While Clark and Fernandez were rock solid, playing a big role in our outstanding defensive display, many have questioned Hayden’s selection, with him struggling to make a major impact in midfield before scoring late on.

Clark undoubtedly deserves his place in any Premier League team of the week. The Irish international was immense for us in that back-line and his defensive display even led to Shearer positively singling out the player for his performance on social media.

Fernandez was also solid, despite being cheap in possession at times, but Hayden’s presence in big Al’s side suggests the former NUFC striker is still on a high from Saturday’s unlikely win!

He was the match-winner, grabbing the headlines with a 94th-minute goal, but his overall game wasn’t exactly eye-catching and this led some to believe Shearer’s choice was purely sentimental rather than logical.
