The Athletic reveal striker NUFC tried to sign this week before he completed shock move

According to The Athletic, Newcastle were one of the clubs trying to sign Jean-Kevin Augustin before he completed a shock move to Leeds yesterday.

This comes from David Ornstein, who reveals that ourselves, Brighton and Crystal Palace all make late moves for the RB Leipzig talent – but missed out, with our ‘reactive’ approach being blitzed by a ‘pro-active’ Leeds Utd.

Speaking on The Athletic’s latest podcast today, here’s what Ornstein had to say:

“A number of clubs were interested and keen to sign him towards the end of this process, it’s worth mentioning the others, Crystal Palace had been keen in the summer, Brighton recently and also Newcastle.

“But they were all too reactive while Leeds were pro-active from the start.”

So, it seems Ademola Lookman – who appears to have gone totally off the radar regarding a move to NUFC – isn’t the only RB Leipzig player we’ve shown interest in this month.

A loan move could’ve boosted our options up top, although Augustin would’ve been another risk – even if the former PSG striker is considered to be one of France’s top young strikers.

Takeover talk has taken over, but that must NOT distract from the fact a striker and left-back is badly needed before Friday’s deadline..
