Update on Willems’ future & fitness arrives – and details of Danny Rose’s ‘loan deal’ revealed

Steve Bruce has confirmed that Jetro Willems underwent knee surgery yesterday – and has refused to rule out a summer move for the Dutchman.

Danny Rose has now arrived until the end of the season, giving us an ideal short-term replacement, however Bruce has stated it’s a “straight loan” – suggesting there’s no agreement to sign him permanently this summer.

The NUFC boss hints at an extended stay for Rose should he do well, but claims we’ll revisit a potential deal for Willems in a few months time:

“We have to hope Jetro operation went well (yesterday).

“We’ll have a look and see where we are in the summer with it.

“He found it difficult to start with, like most people did, but he became a very, very good player for us & we’ll reassess in the summer”

Here’s what Bruce then had to say about Rose’s arrival, suggesting the agreement is only until the end of the season but that a permanent deal could be looked at later down the line IF he impresses:

“It’s a straight loan. All the details on top of that, you have to ask somebody else.

“As far as I’m concerned, he’s here until the summer.

“If he does well and we’ve got the possibility to try and make it permanent, we will act in the summer”

With us lacking options at left wing-back (Ritchie is our only other option), who’s to say we won’t look to sign BOTH this summer?

It seems unlikely given they’ll both want first-team football, but if Rose is available at a cut-price fee and our ‘option to buy’ Willems is around £10m, it may be something we look at.

  1. Getting Danny Rose on loan was a smart move because he is going to add a lot of quality in the back four and NUFC really need some quality in the backline. Permanently signing him would be a masterstroke if that option is available in the summer transfer window.
