Rafa Benitez ‘interested’ in signing the player he brought to Newcastle in 2018 – Report

According to Goal, Rafa Benitez is interested in signing former Mag Ki Sung-yeung.

The 31-year-old is now a free agent having been released by Newcastle by ‘mutual consent’ on deadline day last month.

Goal claim that he’s keen to return to Asia and has already held ‘positive talks’ with Korean side Jeonbuk Hyundai – however Rafa Benitez’s Dalian Yifang are also showing interest.

Benitez brought the midfielder to St James’ Park back in 2018, signing him on a free following his release from Swansea that summer.

Fitness issues meant he took a while to earn a regular place in Rafa’s side, however he did make 19 appearances under the Spaniard in 2018/19 – which is far more than he managed under Bruce (3).

Hopefully the South-Korean finds a new club soon – although it would be no surprise if he’s wary of a move to China given the Chinese Super League is currently on hold following an outbreak of coronavirus!

That said, he may be tempted to join his former manager and ex-teammate Salomon Rondon at Dalian Yifang – a club that would no doubt offer him big bucks as a free agent.
