Atlanta Utd hint at another deal with NUFC – 12 months on from £21m Almiron move

Atlanta Utd’s president Darren Eales has hinted that Miguel Almiron’s move to Newcastle United won’t be the last time the two clubs do business.

Eales reveals that last January’s deal wasn’t the first time he’s worked with Newcastle – having previously been at Spurs – and insists that Almiron’s record move has only brought his past and present club together together.

Considering we’ll be in the market for a striker this summer and have been regularly linked with Atlanta star Josef Martinez, his comments could bode well should we end up pursuing a deal for the prolific MLS star.

Here’s what he’s had to say during a chat with Chronicle:

“It’s like anything in football. I knew the guys at Newcastle from my time at Spurs and what happens in football is once you have done a deal, you get to know the club, you get to know the people and that always makes it easier when the next deal comes along because you’ve got those contacts,”

“Newcastle is a fantastic club with a great history. They play in stripes as well. I think we will always have that affinity because of the deal we did and who knows down that line what may happen?”

Interestingly, the Chronicle also claim that Almiron is still held in such high regard by his former club that ‘thousands’ of Atlanta fans have adopted Newcastle United as their second team – and it sounds like their president may have too!

With the two clubs working together to strike a deal last year and Eales believing to have a very good relationship with Lee Charnley, could we make the most of this and move for Josef Martinez this summer?

The 26-year-old has bagged a stunning 88 goals and 10 assists in 100 MLS appearances, not forgetting the fact his best form came alongside Miguel Almiron.
