Video: Bruce responds to takeover rumours & shares unconvincing update on contract talks

Steve Bruce has again had to answer questions regarding the rumoured Saudi takeover and the contract situation of both Longstaff brothers this morning.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Arsenal this weekend, Bruce gave little away as far as a potential takeover is concerned – simply telling the reporter “No update from me. nothing as far as I’m concerned.”

It is likely that even if there was an imminent takeover due to happen, Bruce would be kept in the dark and the only people to have knowledge would be Ashley and his closest advisors. Even if he did know, Bruce is hardly going to spill the beans in a pre-match press conference.

However, the gaffer did give fans some reason for concern when discussing the Longstaff’s contract situation – saying there’s still no breakthrough after talks and that the players ‘have their own prerogative.

Here’s what he’s had to say on both matters today:

Bruce when asked if there’s any takeover update:

“No, no update from me. No, Nothing as far as I’m concerned.

Bruce on contract talks with the Longstaff’s:

“Again, they’re ongoing. you’re going to ask the same each week, as I’ve said many times now I hope we can get the two of them tied up. But players these days have their own prerogative too so we have to respect that

Regarding the contract situation, this is worrying from a fan’s perspective, with Matty’s contract in particular due to expire at the end of the season – meaning we would lose a talent like him for nothing.

Bruce’s manner in his presser adds substance to something that I have thought for a while – that the brothers could be pushing their luck in contract talks after bursting onto the scene at senior level.

The club hierarchy needs to make both player’s contract situation their highest priority if we are to build the foundations for our future.
