Salomon Rondon linked with shock move to replace striker NUFC were tipped to sign this summer

A few months ago, both the Chronicle and the Athletic confirmed we were keeping a close eye on Miguel Almiron’s former Atlanta teammate Josef Martinez.

Just last weekend, however, the prolific MLS striker suffered a torn knee ligament – a devastating injury which will not only end his 2020 season before it had even begun, but any interest we had in signing him this summer as a result.

Moving on, Atlanta Utd now need a replacement, and leading Venezuelan news outlet Noticia al Dia claim former Newcastle loan star Salomon Rondon is on their wanted list.

So, Almiron’s hopes of being reunited with Martinez may be over, but it sounds like Salomon Rondon will be offered the chance to play for Miggy’s former club in the MLS.

If anything comes of it, he could not only be replacing Miguel Almiron’s best mate and partner in crime, but the man he also knows well from their time together at international level – with both being Venezuelan internationals.

Given the Chinese League has been postponed until further notice due to the Coronavirus outbreak, Rafa Benitez could yet allow Rondon to leave on a temporary deal to regain some match fitness – with the new MLS season kicking off last weekend.
