Newcastle now competing with Sevilla to sign Koray Günter this summer – Report

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle are facing competition from Sevilla for the signature of Koray Günter this summer.

Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo claim we’ve watched the centre-back ‘several times’ this season and could be willing to pay €10m (£8.7m) for his services – but state Sevilla are also keen to sign the German defender.

Günter has been one of the key factors behind Verona’s impressive rise to 8th in Italy, with his impressive displays helping them boast the league’s 4th best defensive record this season – behind only Juventus, Lazio and Inter Milan.

He’s currently on loan with Verona from Genoa, but is expected to earn a permanent move elsewhere this summer after a stand-out season in Serie A.

Although the signing of ANOTHER centre-back seems unlikely, this isn’t actually the first time we’ve been linked with the former Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray defender, with Italian press reporting in September 2019 that we were ‘preparing a €10m bid’ for the 25-year-old.

With us recently moving back to a four-man defence and having SIX capable centre-backs on our books, this seems like one of the last deals we should be looking to do this summer.

That said, the signing of Emil Krafth last summer made little sense (with us already having two senior right-backs on our books at the time), making you wonder if the club will sanction any deal should the player fit the bill in terms of age, price and potential!

One to watch this summer or agent driven rumours from overseas? Time will tell!
