Steve Bruce has confirmed that Dwight Gayle has picked up a knock to his ankle – also sharing updates on injured duo Martin Dubravka and Ciaran Clark.
This comes from his press conference this morning, which, for obvious reasons, centred more around the current coronavirus epidemic than footballing matters!
That said, the Newcastle boss did share an injury update just incase our scheduled clash with Sheffield United (which has now been postponed) did go ahead.
Here’s what he’s had to say, revealing that Gayle has a new injury (albeit a minor one), Dubravka will miss ‘at least’ a month and Clark underwent ankle surgery this week:
“We’ve got one or two injuries.
“The big one is Dubravka, of course.
“Martin is obviously disappointed.
“He’s going to be missing for the next month at least.
“He’s got a strain on his medial ligament in his knee.
“Ciaran Clark had an operation on his ankle two days ago too and is on the road to recovery.
“We have a slight doubt about Gayle, who took a knock to his ankle.”
“They’ve just got to recover and we’ll see how they are.”
Considering Dwight Gayle had only recently broken back into Steve Bruce’s starting 11, it may be that the Premier League break has come at a good time for the injury-prone striker!
One player who will certainly benefit from the 3-week postponement of English football is Dubravka.
He’s still set to be out IF games to recommence on April 4th, but the break could mean he misses a few games less than initially feared.
As for Clark, it seems clear his season is over and we’d like to wish him a full and quick recovery after another rock solid season at St James’ Park.
