Day 4 without football for Newcastle United fans – Shay Given (video)

Another day without football, another day to reflect on some Newcastle United nostalgia.

After looking back on some Obafemi Martins magic yesterday, today we look at one of our all-time greats in goal – Shay Given.

Premier League football looks no closer to returning – with April 4th seeming like the first of many dates it’s put back – so what better player to look back at on St. Patrick’s day than arguably the best Irishman to ever play for Newcastle United.

Looking back on his superb 12-year stint at St James’ Park, here’s some of his best stops:

Considering he played behind a few too many dodgy centre-backs during his time at the club (notice Boumsong and Bramble doing VERY little to protect him in the clips above!), it’s a good job he was such a good goalkeeper!

He may not have commanded his box quite as well as current no.1 Martin Dubravka – who some believe possesses a better all-round game than Shay – but what an incredible shot-stopper he was.

Obafemi Martins yesterday (see our piece on him here), Shay Given today and another trip down memory lane to come tomorrow as we prepare to enter ‘Day 5’ without football!
