Journalist makes surprise NUFC contract claim – Player set to stay for at least 1 more season?

Despite it being previously reported that Karl Darlow’s current deal at St James’ Park was set to expire this summer, it’s now emerged that his contract runs out in 2021.

This comes from the Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson, who claims the goalkeeper’s contract is actually due to expire NEXT summer.

With this in mind, it seems the Newcastle United players who will leave on a free agent at the end of the season (whenever that comes!) will be Rob Elliot, Jack Colback, Jamie Sterry, Andy Carroll, Matty Longstaff and Javier Manquillo – although it’s believed the latter trio could yet be offered extensions.

Back to Darlow, news of him having another year on his current deal at least means he may not have missed his last chance to impress Newcastle chiefs now the season’s been put on hold – although the timing of this all has been pretty awful from his point of view.

After failing to make a Premier League start in over TWO years, he looked set for a spell in the side following Dubravka’s knee injury. Yet, the Slovakian looks more than likely to be fit again when football finally returns!

That said, one potential silver lining for Darlow is that, according to the Northern Echo, Steve Bruce will stick with him in goal should our FA Cup quarter final ever take place – even if Dubravka is back by then.
