The Athletic reveal the Premier League star NUFC looked to sign…before 15-goal season

According to the Athletic, Newcastle United previously looked to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin before his rise to form at Everton this season.

This comes from Chris Waugh, who claims we were one of several Premier League clubs who considered a move for the former England U-21 striker – even when he was struggling to score goals at Goodison Park.

The 23-year-old actually caused us real trouble earlier this season, scoring twice for the Toffees in their 1-2 win at St James’ Park back in December.

He’s always been a handful and hard worker, but Calvert-Lewin has enjoyed a breakthrough season of sorts across 2019/20 – with only 7 Premier League stars scoring more than him this term (Vardy, Aubameyang, Salah, Aguero, Ings, Mane and Rashford).

The 6ft 2′ striker has 15 goals in all competitions and has been in outstanding form since Carlo Ancelotti took over, bagging 10 goals in his last 14 games under the Italian.

Looking at him now, he could’ve worked well in our system, being mobile and physical enough to play in that lone striker role, but his recent run of form will have all but ended any hopes we had of bringing him to Tyneside.
