Premier League player told to sign for Newcastle by Danny Mills – What an awful idea..

A few days on from rumours linking Steve Bruce with an unnecessary move for Man Utd’s Phil Jones, Danny Mills has urged the centre-back to sign for Newcastle United.

Last weekend, the Mirror claimed that Bruce was an admirer of the 28-year-old and is eyeing a summer bid for the defender – a transfer link that didn’t go down too well on Tyneside.

It didn’t make sense for a whole host of reasons (age, cost, injury issues and the fact we’ve got SIX centre-backs better than him!), so we shouldn’t be surprised to read Mills says it would be a great idea.

Now he’s no longer able to have weekly rants about Miguel Almiron, here’s what Mills told Football Insider about reports linking Jones with a summer switch to St James’ Park:

“Phil Jones needs to get out of there and sign for a team like Newcastle. He needs a change.

“It has never really happened for him at Manchester United. He has been there for a long time and has not really played an awful lot. A player that needs a new challenge and a reset to get it going again.

“Undoubtedly there is a good player in there but maybe it is the pressure or the media attention he gets every time he does play.

“He has not got back to the form he showed as a young kid when he first went there.”

OK, Jones needs a move away from Old Trafford to make something of what was once a promising career, but I don’t see us being the answer.

Not only is the signing of a player knocking on the door of 30 (who’s also likely to demand big wages) highly unlikely under Mike Ashley, I don’t see how he gets into our side ahead of Lascelles, Schar, Fernandez, Lejeune, Clark or Dummett.

Centre-back is the last area we need to spend money on and the last thing Jones needs it to join a club he wouldn’t be guaranteed game time at.

Surely a non starter, especially if Mills is recommending him!
