According to WhoScored.com statistics, Joselu has been one of the most improved players in Europe this season.
The former Newcastle United striker completed a £2m move to Alaves last summer following a goal-shy spell at St James’ Park, but he’s been in impressive form since returning to Spain.
As popular stat-site WhoScored.com reveal below, he’s the most improved player in La Liga when comparing his average match rating last season (6.41) to his 2019/20 rating with Alaves (7.29):
He’s managed 9 goals and 3 assists in 26 La Liga appearances – meaning he’s scored more in just over half a season in Spain than he did across two full seasons on Tyneside (7 goals in 52 games).
As the numbers show above, it’s interesting to see Adama Traore is statistically the league’s most improved player, with him being someone Rafa Benitez was heavily linked with signing prior our £10m move for Jacob Murphy.
I don’t think Joselu’s rise to form has anyone wishing we kept him – he never looked like scoring in England – but it’s good to see him enjoying his football again following a return to his homeland.
