Newcastle set to make summer move for Allan Saint-Maximin’s former teammate?

The Chronicle are reporting this morning that we’re eyeing a summer move for Wylan Cyprien – and it’s not the first time we’ve been linked with a move for Allan Saint-Maximin’s former Nice teammate.

Lee Ryder’s piece claims the 25-year-old midfielder has been tracked by our scouts for some time and was on Bruce’s radar in January as he looked to bring ‘energy’ to his midfield.

The report also states the Frenchman knocked back an approach from Aston Villa in January for his services, with Everton also said to be monitoring his situation as he enters the final 12 months of his current deal with Nice.

Cyprien is described as a classic all-round box to box midfielder player, who is competent going forward as well as defensively – something we’ve lacked since the departure of Mo Diame.

Something he had added to his game this season, however, is goals. He has netted 7 times in 20 appearances for Nice this season which is why Premier League clubs are keen for his signature. Goals from midfield – or from anywhere – have been hard to come by for us this season so the thought of a goal-scoring midfielder joining the ranks should be exciting.

Steve Bruce is also thought to be wary of the Longstaff brothers contract situation, with younger brother Matty looking more likely by the day to be headed for the exit door in the summer.

It is interesting, if not concerning, that the Chronicle also report that Isaac Hayden is ‘unsettled’ at the club, something that we all thought was a thing of the past. He even publicly acknowledged this last summer?

Back to Cyprien, it’s said Chief scout Steve Nickson has been watching the midfielder throughout the season – but it is unknown how he is going to be ‘keeping tabs’ on him over the next few months…..perhaps he is planning on spying on him in the garden!
