Lee Ryder responds to claims NUFC will make ‘£30m move’ for John McGinn if Aston Villa go down

After a Daily Star ‘exclusive’ claimed were were ‘poised’ to make a £30m move for John McGinn last night, Lee Ryder has now confirmed Steve Bruce’s interest in signing the Aston Villa star.

The Chronicle’s chief sports writer claims that Bruce and Charnley are now in charge of transfers, with our recruitment staff on furlough leave, and admits the NUFC boss is a big admirer of the midfielder.

Bruce called him one of his ‘best ever signings’ just a few months ago, with McGinn impressing at both Championship and Premier League level since being snapped up for just £2.5m from Hibs back in 2018.

A Scotland international, McGinn has caught the eye this season via his energetic style and determined displays, with his box-to-box style and eye for goal being two things we’ve lacked so far this season.

At 25, he is also set to enter the peak years of his career, meaning he would be signing a player that can improve in ability and in value.

That said, if McGinn – or another midfielder – were to arrive it would give us A LOT of options in the middle of the park.

Shelvey, Hayden, the Longstaff’s and Bentaleb are currently our first team options in that area, but Bruce is thought to be weighing up his options with Hayden and both Longstaff’s future up in the air.

As long as this didn’t drain the funds required for a proper goal scorer, then I’m all for it!

  1. How anyone can make this kind of claim is beyond me? With everything still up in the air. Nobody knows how the future of this season is going to play out, let alone speculate on transfer rumours. The only player we need to sign is Matty Longstaff. ****-ley is treating his situation the same as he did Rafa’s. After Matty goes on a free he, like he did with Rafa, will claim he was asking for to much! The excuse for an owner is a complete and utter moron.
