Fenerbahçe set to make move for NUFC’s unsung hero this summer – Report

According to reports in Turkey, Fenerbahce are lining up a summer move for Newcastle United full-back Javier Manquillo.

This comes from Turkish outlet Fotomac, who claim the Super Lig giants have identified the Spaniard as a key target to replace current right-back Mauricio Isla.

With Isla’s contract due to expire and the Chilean expected to leave on a free, it seems they’re eyeing a cut-price alternative in Manquillo – who’s also set to be available for nothing this summer as things stand.

Some may argue with the headline here and wonder quite how Manquillo is classified as an ‘unsung hero’, but I’d like to think there’s plenty Mags out there who have recognised what a solid job he’s done for us in recent times.

His start to life at St James’ Park was poor, with him looking unfit, incapable of cutting it at this level and destined to flop, but I can barely remember him having a bad game over the past 18 months or so.

Whenever he’s been called upon he’s done a solid job, being better on the ball and more switched on defensively than Yedlin – making him our best all-round right-back as things stand as far as I’m concerned.

Time to reward him with a new contract – or is he a player we should be moving on should a big money buyout go through?

  1. He’s not a bad player, not sure we want him signed up longer term should the takerover happen.
