Agent of €30m La Liga star confirms ‘official’ interest from Newcastle United

Some intriguing comments have emerged this week from the agent of long-term Newcastle United target Willian Jose.

According to Nick Arcuri, the striker’s representative, we are one of FOUR clubs who showed ‘official’ interest in the €30m-rated Real Sociedad srar back in January.

Here’s what the striker’s agent has had to say during a chat with Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola:

“So I tell everyone, just in this January market, he had official, interest.

“He had Barcelona, he had Tottenham, he had Manchester United, he had Newcastle.”

He then went on to confirm Tottenham were the closest of all four clubs to signing him in January, but the 28-year-old ended up staying put in Spain despite travelling to London for talks.

The striker was said to be a big target of Rafa Benitez’s during his time on Tyneside, with the Chronicle’s Mark Douglas revealing in 2018 that Willian Jose was a target of the Spaniard’s before Salomon Rondon arrived on loan.

With 54 goals across his last four seasons in La Liga, you can see why we were interested.

I was going to say ‘you can forget us signing a player who’ll turn 29 later this year’, but hopefully these tedious transfer restrictions will be a thing of the past if and when Mike Ashley packs his bags.
