Every Newcastle fan is jumping for joy at the prospect of Saudi Arabia’s billions being pumped into our club.
Every Newcastle fan, except Steve Bruce that is.
Day one of Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s potential reign will be met by a massive elephant in the room – ‘what on earth do we do with Bruce?’.
Anyone with half a brain will tell you that the most important figure at a football club is the manager, and by splashing out £300million on NUFC, you can be sure that Staveley & Co will want their own man at the helm.
If you spent that much on a house, you certainly wouldn’t want the previous owners wall paper in your living room.
Whether you like him or not, Bruce could quickly become a dead-man walking on Tyneside. To say the reaction to his appointment last summer was poor is an understatement, with many voting with their feet and vowing to stay away from St James’ until Ashley was gone.
Many, myself included, thought we were dead and buried. The departure of Benitez, Rondon and Perez appeared too big a job for Bruce to fill. He was obviously going to be tainted by his stint at Sunderland too, with fans feeling this was another one of Ashley’s tricks to intentionally wind the fans up. Remember Kinnear and Sports Direct Arena?!.
The football has been woeful, but Bruce has surprisingly steadied the ship and kept us in the league, reverting to a back five has worked wonders and we even have an FA Cup quarter-final to look forward to – coronavirus permitting.
He has managed to convince the majority of the fanbase that he is just about up to the current task at hand (which is keeping us up these days), but you’d do well to find a single football fan who’d feel he is capable of achieving the ambitions our potential new owners are likely to have.
One man who springs to mind is Mark Hughes. The Welshman was in charge of Man City when Sheikh Mansour came strolling into town, and most feel he was always on borrowed time from the get-go.
When he was replaced by the more fanciable Roberto Mancini less than 18-months into the gig, this marked the beginning of a City era spent competing at the upper echelons of the Premier League.
Bruce could suffer a similar fate, and the romantic return of Rafa Benitez is what some Toon fans are already hoping for. Staveley is thought to be an admirer too.
Let’s not forget, Bruce hasn’t always been the most loyal of dogs himself over the years. As well as both North-East clubs, Bruce’s CV consists of Aston Villa, Birmingham, Sheffield United and Wednesday.
He has reached his ceiling as a manager. He certainly won’t be poached for a job bigger than Newcastle and any exit would likely see him make the move back down to the Championship.
If a takeover is to be the end of Bruce’s stint at the club then our fanbase should only wish him well. After all, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia certainly wouldn’t be interested in freeing us from Mike Ashley if we were sitting in the bottom three.

About 10% of the clubs history. Quite a bit – but I know what you mean – the club will likely become a global machine and will have an almost artificial popularity aka Manure, Citeh etc – if we are lucky enough to invest properly and win some stuff.
Personally I can happily live with that. I’m sick of those clubs fans lording it over us, pundits insinuating we are deluded for wanting better for our club etc etc.
All it will mean is that our club will have the tools to achieve a level playing field with the top 6 – IF the investment is pumped into the club in a structured and intelligent way.
If we start to win trophies after all that work, then we will win them because we deserve and earnt them. It’s not like Newcastle would be buying success in the same way Chelsea or Man City did – because there are so many competitors up that end of the table that pump so much money in nowadays that we will just be another club doing the same thing – as opposed to the only 1 or 2 clubs doing it.
I want to be excited and entertained watching our matches. Not bored to death by anti football on the pitch and constant relegation battles. Bring back the entertainers, and if that means a few glory hunters jumping in board – so what.
We are no danger of losing our soul. It has been ripped out long ago by Ashley. If anything, this will help us find it again.

I think he is saying Newcastle is an isolated outpost like we are living in Roman times. You can get a flight to London, Paris or Amsterdam in an hour. The times have changed much more in that respect than Souness’ one-eyed ramblings.
I lived in London for 3 years but was glad to get out. It was just so busy and has got worse. Been back quite a few times but not for 10 years and doubt I will go back again to pay $300 for a shoe-box hotel room and $30 for a cocktail shaken by some ponce “mixologist”.

I looked at the clubs Zlatan has played for. Most are more attractive cities than Newcastle or Manchester for that matter. But the point is he has moved around and people coming to Newcastle are hardly likely to spend the rest of their lives here. Probably a 4 year contract and they will be off.

Just read the beIN sports letter to PL clubs. It is quite a weird argument, asking the PL to police piracy of PL games but also saying that the Saudi enterprise doing it has ceased operation. It would appear that horse has bolted and what can the PL do about it anyway. Piracy is a worldwide problem but do the PL want to, or have the right to, get involved in political arguments between 2 sovereign nations?
It is like a veiled threat to PL clubs saying support Qatar or we will pull the plug on the deal next time. The deal is with Al Jazeera a 100% Qatari state owned media group. I didn’t (don’t) know enough about the Qatar/Saudi feud to really express much of an opinion but I know enough to know that when Richard Keys weighs in then there will be an agenda there. And I do know hypocrisy when I see it. Trying to ban one suppressive state owned wealth fund from owning a football club whilst allowing others from the same region is hypocrisy. I want football to resume for selfish reasons, because it will be a light at the end of the tunnel for C-19 and I would like to watch a WC type tournament.
If it doesn;t resume we are probably going to be the club least affected in the PL. Of course that assumes the takeover goes through. But the numbers I have seen are we would lose 30 mil in TV money and 10 mil from gate and sponsorship. That assumes the TV money is paid back immediately and not stretched out. Sky or BT would not want to put football in trouble. That is their golden goose. In fact it was how Sky was built. Sports is actually also the cornerstone of US TV networks as well so they all need to keep their flagship products afloat.
Why will we be in the best shape? Because we have new cash coming in when player prices will be down and there will be less competition for signatures. And the FFP rules are averages over 3 years I think so we could make a big splash and then calm down in a couple of years. For all of Fat Man’s stupidity, his frugality has also left us in good shape in a buyers market.

Eric, the more I’m seeing the more I realise football needs to wake up and cancel, void or average the points out. We aren’t going to finish this season. The government said yesterday that social distancing will be here for the rest of the Calendar year at least. So the notion that players and coaches can get close during training and matches so early is for the birds. One player or coach who gets the symptoms messes is it all up. Get a conclusion now, Lance the boil and then football has at least 4 months to sort out what’s happening for the next season whether August or January 2021.
As for the Saudi’s I doubt greatly we will be throwing hundreds of millions at it straight away. But I do believe there’ll be a very good chance that we will be amongst the highest spenders in the country over the next twelve months and the coronavirus virus will play to our benefit too.

I don’t think there’s many (and certainly none I know) that expect a billion quid spent.
No fan I know wants to go buy the league. All we’ve ever wanted is owners who have ambition (unlike Ashley) – who will hire the right people to grow our club (we have very few board members growing the club commercially) – to employ the best people possible (not promote the tea boy Charnley) – to invest in proper training facilities (which has never been done under Ashley) – up keep our stadium (which is falling to bits, held together by SD signs) – hire the best manager possible (only Rafa would fit that bill under Ashley) and invest money in playing staff (something Ashley has only done in 2 windows in his tenure).
We want to be entertained and compete above anything else.
If the Saudis can do that, they will be adopted Geordies. If they invest in the area and improve communities in and around Newcastle – that’s what most Geordie fans would love more.

My hopes for the takeover is that we play football that I enjoy to watch. I want to see a possession based game where we attack and have plenty pace. We can’t be guaranteed to win but I just want to enjoy it and give it a go.

We may have reached peak nonsense from Richard Keys. Today he’s still complaining about the Arabsat issue and them pirating football games. I’ve done some research on them and they’re actually owned by many Arab States – including 9.8% of the shares owned by Qatar! Should Qatar relinquish their shareholding in PSG! UAE are also 5% shareholders. Should City’s owners have a forced sale of City?
