Where does a Saudi-backed takeover leave Steve Bruce?

Every Newcastle fan is jumping for joy at the prospect of Saudi Arabia’s billions being pumped into our club.

Every Newcastle fan, except Steve Bruce that is.

Day one of Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s potential reign will be met by a massive elephant in the room – ‘what on earth do we do with Bruce?’.

Anyone with half a brain will tell you that the most important figure at a football club is the manager, and by splashing out £300million on NUFC, you can be sure that Staveley & Co will want their own man at the helm.

If you spent that much on a house, you certainly wouldn’t want the previous owners wall paper in your living room.

Whether you like him or not, Bruce could quickly become a dead-man walking on Tyneside. To say the reaction to his appointment last summer was poor is an understatement, with many voting with their feet and vowing to stay away from St James’ until Ashley was gone.

Many, myself included, thought we were dead and buried. The departure of Benitez, Rondon and Perez appeared too big a job for Bruce to fill. He was obviously going to be tainted by his stint at Sunderland too, with fans feeling this was another one of Ashley’s tricks to intentionally wind the fans up. Remember Kinnear and Sports Direct Arena?!.

The football has been woeful, but Bruce has surprisingly steadied the ship and kept us in the league, reverting to a back five has worked wonders and we even have an FA Cup quarter-final to look forward to – coronavirus permitting.

He has managed to convince the majority of the fanbase that he is just about up to the current task at hand (which is keeping us up these days), but you’d do well to find a single football fan who’d feel he is capable of achieving the ambitions our potential new owners are likely to have.

One man who springs to mind is Mark Hughes. The Welshman was in charge of Man City when Sheikh Mansour came strolling into town, and most feel he was always on borrowed time from the get-go.

When he was replaced by the more fanciable Roberto Mancini less than 18-months into the gig, this marked the beginning of a City era spent competing at the upper echelons of the Premier League.

Bruce could suffer a similar fate, and the romantic return of Rafa Benitez is what some Toon fans are already hoping for. Staveley is thought to be an admirer too.

Let’s not forget, Bruce hasn’t always been the most loyal of dogs himself over the years. As well as both North-East clubs, Bruce’s CV consists of Aston Villa, Birmingham, Sheffield United and Wednesday.

He has reached his ceiling as a manager. He certainly won’t be poached for a job bigger than Newcastle and any exit would likely see him make the move back down to the Championship.

If a takeover is to be the end of Bruce’s stint at the club then our fanbase should only wish him well. After all, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia certainly wouldn’t be interested in freeing us from Mike Ashley if we were sitting in the bottom three.

  1. About 10% of the clubs history. Quite a bit – but I know what you mean – the club will likely become a global machine and will have an almost artificial popularity aka Manure, Citeh etc – if we are lucky enough to invest properly and win some stuff.

Personally I can happily live with that. I’m sick of those clubs fans lording it over us, pundits insinuating we are deluded for wanting better for our club etc etc.

All it will mean is that our club will have the tools to achieve a level playing field with the top 6 – IF the investment is pumped into the club in a structured and intelligent way.

If we start to win trophies after all that work, then we will win them because we deserve and earnt them. It’s not like Newcastle would be buying success in the same way Chelsea or Man City did – because there are so many competitors up that end of the table that pump so much money in nowadays that we will just be another club doing the same thing – as opposed to the only 1 or 2 clubs doing it.

I want to be excited and entertained watching our matches. Not bored to death by anti football on the pitch and constant relegation battles. Bring back the entertainers, and if that means a few glory hunters jumping in board – so what.

We are no danger of losing our soul. It has been ripped out long ago by Ashley. If anything, this will help us find it again.

Just be prepared to be in a pub one day standing next a guy with a Newcastle shirt on watching a game and he has no idea who Shearer is.

  5. I don’t really care if we have a load of glory fans. If it means we get better revenues and better players.

It’s not all about winning the league as that will be very difficult. This is going to be the most competitive era of the PL no doubt about it. But if we can eventually get in the CL then anything can happen. Spurs got to the final. Who’s to say we can’t do the same and win it?

  6. Souness’ argument about all players wanting to live in London doesn’t make any sense. Man U, Man City and Liverpool have all attracted better players than the London clubs in recent years.

I think he is saying Newcastle is an isolated outpost like we are living in Roman times. You can get a flight to London, Paris or Amsterdam in an hour. The times have changed much more in that respect than Souness’ one-eyed ramblings.

I lived in London for 3 years but was glad to get out. It was just so busy and has got worse. Been back quite a few times but not for 10 years and doubt I will go back again to pay $300 for a shoe-box hotel room and $30 for a cocktail shaken by some ponce “mixologist”.

I lived in Islington and it is nothing like it was when I was there 30 years ago. Full of poseurs and plastics.

Like most of the pundits, Souness presents a simplistic and one-sided argument and talks about it like it is fact.

  7. Footballers have short careers where they hardly stay in 1 place for more than about 3 years. They follow money and success. London might be more attractive to some than Newcastle but how long will they be there for?

I looked at the clubs Zlatan has played for. Most are more attractive cities than Newcastle or Manchester for that matter. But the point is he has moved around and people coming to Newcastle are hardly likely to spend the rest of their lives here. Probably a 4 year contract and they will be off.

    Zlatans clubs:

Malmo, Ajax, Juve, Inter, Barca, Milan, PSG, Man U, LA, Milan.

That wouldn’t fit in with what Souness says though.

I have been to all of the museums and football grounds there so why bother going back. When I was there the music scene was vibrant which is part of the reason I stayed. Now it is shyte. Everybody I knew in London has moved out for the same reasons as me.

  9. Just read the beIN sports letter to PL clubs. It is quite a weird argument, asking the PL to police piracy of PL games but also saying that the Saudi enterprise doing it has ceased operation. It would appear that horse has bolted and what can the PL do about it anyway. Piracy is a worldwide problem but do the PL want to, or have the right to, get involved in political arguments between 2 sovereign nations?

It is like a veiled threat to PL clubs saying support Qatar or we will pull the plug on the deal next time. The deal is with Al Jazeera a 100% Qatari state owned media group. Promoting their own political agenda worldwide. This is as much a form of sportswashing as owning NUFC, Man City or indeed PSG who the Qataris own. It is a hypocritical argument and I am not just saying that because I am a NUFC fan.

I am going to write to the PL telling them that Kimtoon should be banned from all NUFC games as she has posted internet links to live matches.

Did the older ones go to the Argentina WC in 1986 when it was a military dictatorship and thousands of their citizens were murdered – so many that they had a word for it, the disappeared.

I am not even defending the Saudis as I know what they are doing. Just saying to journalists and pundits that if you are going to talk the talk then walk the walk. Clearly they haven’t done that in the past.

So many other examples, but I will stop there.

You cant have it all ways Guys. Condemning the Saudis and going to the Qatar WC. But it is slow at the moment for all things football and NUFC are a convenient punching bag.

Their job is to write about football and that and their families consumes 90% of their day. Do they know more about this than you or I?

I don’t know why the papers allow them to spout on subjects they are not employed to know anything about from their privileged soap box. Keep it on twitter or chats with your friends down the pub, that’s where it belongs. I don’t care to hear semi-informed football journalists views on these issues that are being implicitly legitimized by the editors and owners whether they be left or right leaning.

I will be extremely mad if this uninformed drivel in most cases holds sway with the PL. Sometimes it works like that when a bandwagon gets rolling and they all jump on it. It forces an outcome from the ones being harangued (the PL in this case).

    Good news Shamrock.

And does anybody really believe that Bein Sports/Al Jazeera would pull the plug on their PL deal with the 2022 WC coming up? It is their attempt to legitimize their own regime and they want the exposure. The PL is the most multicultural in the world with Brazilians, Senegalese, Egyptians etc as well as stars from all of the European countries. Are they seriously going to not show Mo Salah or Wilf Zaha every week with their carefully staged extravaganza coming up in 2 years? Give me a break!

This is their opportunity for sportswashing on ******** and any threat to the PL is empty.

Don’t think it is just liberals Stuart. It is journos of every political stripe, passing on their underinformed and meaningless opinions onto their readers. I didn’t (don’t) know enough about the Qatar/Saudi feud to really express much of an opinion but I know enough to know that when Richard Keys weighs in then there will be an agenda there. And I do know hypocrisy when I see it. Trying to ban one suppressive state owned wealth fund from owning a football club whilst allowing others from the same region is hypocrisy. They tied themselves in knots trying to tell us why the Saudis are the worst. What, are the Qataris only 99% as bad on human rights and so should be allowed to have the PL games TV rights and the WC? I didn’t see journos piping up on that. Bein Sports/ Al Jazeera is a 100% Qatari state owned media company set up to further the agenda of that state.

The football media should just STFU and concentrate on things they know something about, although that is debatable in a lot of cases.

The lack of actual football has brought out some true colours in some of them. Aspiring Piers Morgans who think they know everything about everything and we should listen to them.

That’s the point of buying us. To be associated with a winning team in a terrific atmosphere and on TV every week.

If you think about it, it would be a drop in the bucket compared what Qatar are spending on the WC. For a 2 month bit of good publicity.

Did the Halls ever have a plan to expand beyond 52,000. I know there are some listed buildings and even Fatty had moved some adjacent property into a separate company but I think they will want to expand. Just buy him out of the property at a 20% premium. I would hate to see him benefit from our future success.

The PL can’t stop the Saudis buying a football club, so the PL might as well make it one of theirs.

I am sure none of the people with the boxes are remotely interested in his crappy little show so they will not be pirating that part of Bein Sports. It was on once a week over here and it was amateur hour. They would have has-been guests on a and banter about their golf games or what they had for dinner last night – hilarious and exactly what the audience were NOT interested in. Andy had put on the pounds but seemingly had not bought new suits and would be forever pulling on the jacket to get it around his giant girth. It got irritating after a while.

They took Bein off the air here about 3 years ago.

  27. I want football to resume for selfish reasons, because it will be a light at the end of the tunnel for C-19 and I would like to watch a WC type tournament.

If it doesn;t resume we are probably going to be the club least affected in the PL. Of course that assumes the takeover goes through. But the numbers I have seen are we would lose 30 mil in TV money and 10 mil from gate and sponsorship. That assumes the TV money is paid back immediately and not stretched out. Sky or BT would not want to put football in trouble. That is their golden goose. In fact it was how Sky was built. Sports is actually also the cornerstone of US TV networks as well so they all need to keep their flagship products afloat.

Why will we be in the best shape? Because we have new cash coming in when player prices will be down and there will be less competition for signatures. And the FFP rules are averages over 3 years I think so we could make a big splash and then calm down in a couple of years. For all of Fat Man’s stupidity, his frugality has also left us in good shape in a buyers market.

      (Quote)

  28. Eric, the more I’m seeing the more I realise football needs to wake up and cancel, void or average the points out. We aren’t going to finish this season. The government said yesterday that social distancing will be here for the rest of the Calendar year at least. So the notion that players and coaches can get close during training and matches so early is for the birds. One player or coach who gets the symptoms messes is it all up. Get a conclusion now, Lance the boil and then football has at least 4 months to sort out what’s happening for the next season whether August or January 2021.

As for the Saudi’s I doubt greatly we will be throwing hundreds of millions at it straight away. But I do believe there’ll be a very good chance that we will be amongst the highest spenders in the country over the next twelve months and the coronavirus virus will play to our benefit too.

      (Quote)

  29. Stuart: it does feel that if what the Govt is saying about social distancing that would make it very hard for the PL to resume. But no Government has shown that they really know much about what is going on and all are receiving criticism. Are we to believe what they say now? The peak was supposed to be this week in the UK, let’s see how that plays out.

I wouldn’t cancel the season just yet. There is no reason to be hasty. What purpose would that serve when we have a test case we can follow in Germany? If the German’s change their mind about resuming the Bundesliga I think that would convince me that the PL is over for this year. If they play then why cant we?

I know there are issues about test kits being used for players and whether the Govt would come in and tell the clubs they need to adhere to social distancing, but it is usually not good to make crucial decisions at the height of a crisis.

      (Quote)

  30. Can the PL actually look into bin Salman? It is the guy that runs the PIF that will be Chairman, not him. Can you really see the head of State having much to do with NUFC unless it is to do a lap of honour after winning the Champions League. Mansour is hardly seen at Man City. He appointed people to run it and lets them get on with it.

Who are the others? Stavely as CEO and a Reubens representative. I doubt there will be much to question there especially since the Reubens guy is already a Director of QPR.

To cast the net to include bin Salman seems a bit wide to me and maybe just a part of Richard Keys’ (wet) dreams. The man has no self awareness. He talks about morals and we all know HIS record. He is also spouting propaganda for a regime that has the same human rights issues as the Saudis. The kicker is that he works for an organization that is 100% owned by the state and whose purpose is to sportswash. I haven’t even mentioned PSG.

I had to bring up Keys again because he is one prize t!t. And Andy Gray just sitting there nodding along like one of those toy dogs people used to have near the back window of their cars.

All inexperienced not double figure scorers. I think we could attract one of the following plus another who is younger. A Timo Werner type, if not Timo himself.

Willian – as Warren Barton suggests

    Giroud

Cavani – 32 but is class. I have no doubt he would adapt to the PL. I think he ran his contract down because he is sick of Neymar and knows he would be playing second fiddle to MBappe as well.

Mertens – more of a punt, but if he is free…

Said it before, but Beardsley and Shearer played until they were 35. This lot have had very few injuries in their careers. I think that’s the key with older players.

Only way this nightmare really ends is with a working vaccine or medication that lessens it’s effects and stops most who get it dying.

Anyway, my logic is that this has to be over by then. If they keep up the quarantine there will be another Great Depression. Even dumb politicians have to see that. And social distancing until 2021 is not feasible either.

In the next month or so they will have to choose between a relatively small number of deaths from a pandemic or global poverty and even more death from a depression. If they do not make that decision to resume life in a more normalized way in the next 2 months we are all fcked.

I would happily see Willian come in too. He’s top notch and would be perfect for our right wing.

I was really impressed with the 2 young Norwich full backs this season, and would be happy to see them come in too.

I saw a few Stoke games this season and Tyrese Campbell is a young forward with them who was banging goals in despite them not playing great. I’d get him in as a developing forward behind Werner.

So has our government in parts. Lets be honest here, even the Tory rags are turning on them now.
Lack of testing and the PPE issues are massive failings, the latter no doubt in my mind resulting in frontline deaths.
The 18,738 hospital deaths are the tip of a bl oody big iceberg, you can probably put another 4,000 at least on that with community covid deaths.

I am sure Simon Jordan knows how FFP works but saying how we could work within those rules to become a top 6 team isn’t controversial enough. So he has to say we cannot be another Chelsea or City and cannot spend a billion. That’s what his listeners want. He’s another one obsessed with saying negative things about NUFC.

Then there is the fact that nobody else will have any money so transfer prices will come down, simple supply and demand. Then the new ownership group have stated their intent of increasing our sponsorship revenue which was totally neglected by Ashley and entirely possible when we raise our profile.

But that is not hyperbolic enough for these talking heads. They would rather make up a number like 1 billion and then act like the NUFC fans said it. And act like it would all be spent in the 1st year.

I suppose that is the nature of talk radio, but they love to pile on to NUFC.

Who the fck cares about a 2 year European ban in THAT big picture… I am sure it will be reduced to a year anyway.

Meanwhile City had won the league, a treble and attracted Pep, De Bruyne, Aguero etc. Their revenue went up from being like Villa’s to more than Liverpool meaning they are on a sustainable path to compete with the elite of Europe for the forseeable future. Who the fck cares about a 2 year European ban in THAT big picture… I am sure it will be reduced to a year anyway.

But that doesn’t fit the narrative that NUFC fans think we will spend 1 billion in the 1st year and that is being NAIVE

Eric – I posted on that article.

Simon Jordan speaks as though he knows what NUFC fans want or expect.

I don’t think there’s many (and certainly none I know) that expect a billion quid spent.

No fan I know wants to go buy the league. All we’ve ever wanted is owners who have ambition (unlike Ashley) – who will hire the right people to grow our club (we have very few board members growing the club commercially) – to employ the best people possible (not promote the tea boy Charnley) – to invest in proper training facilities (which has never been done under Ashley) – up keep our stadium (which is falling to bits, held together by SD signs) – hire the best manager possible (only Rafa would fit that bill under Ashley) and invest money in playing staff (something Ashley has only done in 2 windows in his tenure).

We want to be entertained and compete above anything else.

If the Saudis can do that, they will be adopted Geordies. If they invest in the area and improve communities in and around Newcastle – that’s what most Geordie fans would love more.

  49. Henry Winter spot on. Says some clubs kicking up a fuss about this takeover on basis of ethics and tv deals but reality is they’re worried about what NUFC could become. Very funny.

We wouldn’t be Man City that’s for sure with the empty seats. Sometimes I think they would prefer to wallow in the bad times rather than enjoy the good times. Sort of like Oasis and their songs. No matter how big or loved they were they would still b!tch and moan about something. Not surprised they are City fans.

  51. The Posnan sums up Man City perfectly. Aguero scores a wonder goal after a perfect De Bruyne pass and they all turn their backs on them rather than enjoy it with the players!!!! Even though they are jumping up and down they should be celebrating with their players and not doing some fake, plastic copied celebration.

  52. Are they still doing the Posnan or did they get as bored with it as everybody was with them doing it?

  53. FINALLY….

People are starting to realise that Phil Neville is a FCN idiot.

I said on here the day he was hired for the women’s team that he was a moron.

He does commentary over here and if you do the opposite to what he says you will be correct.

    #PNev=Moron

  55. Ice – Ramadan shouldn’t have an impact. Muslims still work they just can’t eat or drink until it’s dark.

Personally I feel we will hear something by this time next week.

  57. My hopes for the takeover is that we play football that I enjoy to watch. I want to see a possession based game where we attack and have plenty pace. We can’t be guaranteed to win but I just want to enjoy it and give it a go.

    Simple really.

  59. Miguel Dalaney at The Independent has suddenly become a human rights crusader in regards to Saudis and NUFC. Never a peep about MCFC.

He needs to remember he is a football writer and not a politician.

I have looked into the issues about Middle East countries owning football teams. It is really complicated and should be kept off football blogs. If you open that can of worms it ends up turning into Troy’s brother lecturing people on Eds about geo-politics.

  60. That said, I think we (I) are still allowed to say Richard Keys is a d!ck though. Because he is wading into the political territory and trashing NUFC and he needs a counterpoint. Even on here.

Is that contradictory? I don’t know anymore!

  61. And Simon Jordan!!!

Some fool made up a number of us spending 1 billion dollars and he ran with it to support his bluster and anti-NUFC agenda.

  62. We may have reached peak nonsense from Richard Keys. Today he’s still complaining about the Arabsat issue and them pirating football games. I’ve done some research on them and they’re actually owned by many Arab States – including 9.8% of the shares owned by Qatar! Should Qatar relinquish their shareholding in PSG! UAE are also 5% shareholders. Should City’s owners have a forced sale of City?
