“Get him!” – Ex-NUFC star tells Saudis to sign £52m Liverpool target – Time for a reality check?

Former Newcastle United full-back Warren Barton has urged the club to make a move for German star Timo Werner should a Saudi-backed takeover go through.

This comes just a few days after the ex-Mag tipped us to appoint Mauricio Pochettino and make a move for Chelsea’s Willian, however he may need to reign in his expectations – no matter how much money the Saudis may arrive with.

Bleacher Report wrote an in-depth piece on Friday claiming ‘elite level’ signings won’t be arriving anytime soon – stating the would-be owners are aware they’ll have to build the club’s status and manage finances before huge moves can be made.

Just because one report has said it doesn’t mean it’s true or that Saudi riches won’t be enough to see us sign big names immediately, but I think it’d be wise if we don’t expect TOO much too soon. .

Even if we are boosted financially and see our profile raised, I think it’s naive of Barton to suggest we should be going for a striker who’s reportedly ‘ready to sign’ for Liverpool – a club we are years away from competing with on more than one level.

I’m sure we’ll no longer be shopping in the bargain basement, ignoring top targets to save the odd million elsewhere or only signing players under a certain age, but can’t expect world class players to immediately jump at the prospect of a move to St James’ Park just because we have the richest owners in world football.

The arrival of both wealthy and ambitious owners will be brilliant, giving us every chance of being back where we belong competing with the bigger boys, but Rome wasn’t build in a day.

After 13 years of destruction under Mike Ashley it’ll take time to rebuild us, meaning we can’t expect too much too soon – no matter how much cash our silly-rich owners may have!
