Saudis want to make ex-Liverpool star their first big signing after £300m takeover – Report

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle’s would-be new owners have already identified the audacious signing they want to pull off to mark their £300m arrival on Tyneside.

It’s a sentence I never expected to be reading anytime soon (and it must be taken with a considerable pinch of salt), but Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claims the Saudis have earmarked Phillipe Coutinho as ambitious target.

The piece claims they see the Brazilian – who’s expected to leave Barcelona soon after a difficult spell at the Nou Camp – as the ‘flagship of their new project‘.

Coutinho is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League following a stunning 5-year spell with Liverpool between 2013 and 2018, however the same report states that Chelsea, Spurs and Everton are also keen.

It’s another outlandish link and fantasy talk until a takeover is officially announced, but we might have to get used to being linked with big names given Staveley and the Saudis clearly have big plans (and even bigger wallets!).

Money talks, but I think it’ll be a while yet until we can attract the Coutinho’s of this world. That said, after years of shopping in the bargain basement under Mike Ashley, wouldn’t it be nice to actually believe we had an outside chance via wealthy owners with big ambitions.
