George Caulkin drops big update on Premier League tests & completion of £300m Saudi takeover

Speaking on The Athletic’s latest podcast (which was released last night), George Caulkin claims the Saudi-backed consortium could well receive Premier League approval today.

While this ‘green light’ from PL chiefs is the final hurdle left to overcome – meaning a takeover now looks to be imminent – he insists that an announcement won’t come until the money is transferred to Mike Ashley, meaning we may have to wait a few more days yet until we hear official confirmation.

Here’s what George Caulkin’s had to say on The Athletic’s latest ‘Pod On the Tyne’ podcast – which was amusingly named ‘Frozen #Cans’:

“We’re at the point now where it’s still with the Premier League, but that process is now nearly at an end.

“I’m told that (Premier League approval) could be done by Wednesday.

“And then after that it’s about money being transferred.

“Because this is a ludicrously large amount of money, I’m told this is always the way it works that there’ll be a deadline for that money to be sent over, so we could then be another week away or another few days away, so we’re quite close.”

“I’ve been told from the start that they were very confident about the directors test being passed and that there hasn’t been any red flags.

“They’re confident and it’s very close now to getting the green light, and then it’s about the money being transferred – and if that didn’t happen after all this, that would be very peculiar, wouldn’t it!”

Chris Waugh also gave another positive update when commenting on the deal, stating that it’s now “just a matter of time” until the deal is announced – insisting that complaints from BeIN Sports and Amnesty International do NOT look set to have any impact on Premier League approval.

So, it looks like it’s a case of ‘when it happens’, not ‘if’ it does, however this update from Caulkin gives us an idea just how close we are to hearing an announcement, with it seeming as though we’re just a big-money transfer away from being rid of Mike Ashley – and saying hello to some silly-rich new owners!
