Rafa Benitez “expected to return” if £19m move for Pochettino falls through – Sky Sports

After just getting our breath back following Sky Sports’ ‘breaking news’ that Mauricio Pochettino is the Saudis top target ahead of a £300m takeover, more details on their managerial plans have emerged.

As revealed in their latest piece on Pochettino, they state that Rafa Benitez is “expected to return to St James’ Park” should a move for the former Tottenham boss ‘fall through’ – suggesting the Spaniard is well anthe Saudis clear plan B.

Here’s a snippet from Sky Sports’ latest piece, which also highlights the 60-year-old’s eagerness to return to the Premier League with Newcastle:

If the Pochettino deal falls through, former Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, now managing at Dalian Yifang in the Chinese Super League, is expected to return to St James’ Park.

Benitez has also made no secret of his wish to manage in the Premier League again.

However, Newcastle’s potential new owners may have to dig even deeper to tempt him away from his £12m-a-year after tax contract in China.

His contract at Dalian Yifang has been described as ‘water tight’, with Sky Sports also highlighting that he currently earns £12m-a-year AFTER tax in China, but money may well be no object to these Saudi-backed buyers when it comes to appointing the most important man at the club.

If and when this £300m takeover is officially announced, who would you like to see them go for?

Pochettino? Benitez? Or someone entirely different?

  1. I’d really love keegan to come back and manage. Just because he’s been out for a while, he’s a football man. He knows a footballer. He’s a motivator. He’s about passion not money.
He plays the type of football we want.
You score 3? No problem we’ll score 5.
