George Caulkin reveals the “latest information” on a £300m Saudi takeover – No need to panic?

George Caulkin has issued a reassuring update on the Newcastle United takeover front tonight.

The reliable North-East writer insists there’s still “overwhelming positivity” coming from the buying side regarding the completion of this £300m deal.

He also stresses “it will take as long as it takes”, urging both anxious and eager fans to have patience after Premier League tests dragged into another week (despite suggestions they looked set to be given the thumbs up at the back end of last).

Speaking as a host on tonight’s Digital Toon Town Hall event – which featured local MP Chi Onwurah and NUFC Trust members – here’s the short but sweet message Caulkin shared on the prospective takeover:

“For the purposes of strict accuracy I should say ‘prospective takeover’.

“That’s not to start conspiracy theories on Twitter, it’s just to state facts.

“My latest information is that there’s still overwhelming positivity on the buyer’s side, but it will take as long as it takes.”

It’s been another quiet day on the takeover front, but I’m a firm believer that silence is golden when it comes to deals like this – especially when it’s been well documented that they’re just waiting to get the green light for the Premier League (and to transfer the necessary funds) to officially become our new owners.

Given Caulkin is widely accepted to be the region’s most reliable reporter, saw proof of Staveley’s previous bids and is showing no signs of panic regarding this deal getting ‘over the line’, so this can only be seen as a reassuring update that should allow fans to believe no news is good news, for now at least.

Some are fearing the worst as the days/weeks pass by, but we must remember that several obstacles have been placed in the way from beIN Sports and Amnesty which only prolongs the process (yet the vast majority of reporters remain convinced it’ll happen), as well as the fact we are in the middle of a global pandemic and unprecedented times – something which may also be contributing to the time it’s taking before we get an official announcement.

No need to panic it seems, but here’s hoping the news we’ve all been waiting for arrives before too long!

  1. Matthew Collins, what a very silly childish thing to say. I hope your parents don’t catch you using that type of language, Otherwise it will be off to bed without your cheesy chips!!

  2. I cannot get excited about this take over because of all the other false dawns.
We had all last summer telling us it was a done deal only to end up with Steve Bruce as Head Coach at the end of it, The irony of that !

I will remain sceptical until as John Anderson has said : “They Are Pictured In The Centre Circle Of St James’ Park With Scarves Aloft.”
Only then will I start cracking the bubbly open and breaking house arrest to run around the streets naked and burning effigies of Mike Ashley !
