Manager responds to report saying he’s the Saudis “plan B” if Pochettino rejects NUFC job

Andre Villas-Boas has responded to rumours linking him with the Newcastle United job, insisting he has no interest in returning to the Premier League.

The former Spurs and Chelsea boss was said to be the Saudis back-up option this week, with French report Foot Mercato claiming both he and Lucien Favre (Dortmund) described as the Saudis ‘plan B’ should a move for ‘top target’ Mauricio Pochettino.

That said, it seems he has zero interest in coming back to England or replacing Steve Bruce should the Saudis complete a takeover and come calling, with him fully committed to his current role at Marseille.

Here’s what he told RMC Sport when quizzed about the Newcastle links:

“I do not want to return to the Premier League.

“I have already done that. I want to do something else.

“It is not the league that was the happiest for me. I had a marvellous year at Tottenham, where we finished with a points record. But my half-season with Chelsea and the one that followed at Tottenham were not successful.

:So, I want to continue to do things because I still have plans for my career.

“In any case I am very happy at Marseille.

“I want to do the Champions’ League with Marseille.”

In all honesty, I don’t think there’ll be many Newcastle fans losing any sleep tonight after reading this!

He’s doing a brilliant job at Marseille, with them 2nd in Ligue 1 as things stand and on course to return to the Champions League, however his stints at Spurs and Stamford Bridge were largely unconvincing.

There’s so much up in the air right and a lost to sift through before it comes to this, but if a takeover was completed and the would-be owners weren’t able to replace Bruce with Pochettino, who would you like to see come in?

  1. Rafa for me as, like previously mentioned, knows the club, area and league. However, as I can’t see him breaking his contract I’d quite happily give Louis Enrique a go

  2. Rafa all day. I voted for poch in the poll but only because Rafa would have been realistic.
Rafa knows the players, knows the fans, knows the history, knows the ambition – has the ambition himself. Of course this is if the takeover ever happens.

  3. One question that keeps bugging me about the takeover. When it’s all done and dusted, where will the club stand in terms of merchandise and advertising? Will the Fat **** still be trousering cash from shirt sales and benefitting from free advertising or are both deals up for tender?
