Forget the Saudis for a second, it’s time the Premier League took a good look at this man…

As every Newcastle United fan under the sun will know, all the talk on Tyneside is currently centred around whether the Premier League will or will not approve a £300m Saudi-backed takeover at St James’ Park.

It’s the big question we’ve been waiting to hear the answer to for what feels like a lifetime now, however the ongoing delay allows us to focus our attentions elsewhere for a moment.

I won’t name names, but a piece was released today from a Newcastle United site urging the Premier League to BLOCK the proposed buyout. An awful take on a situation that’s frustrating enough as it is, yet there is one person they need to take a good look at – Mike Ashley.

We talk about their ‘fit and proper person’s test’ to determine whether a potential new owner is deemed suitable to own a Premier League club – something the Saudi-backed consortium are currently being scrutinised over – yet the latest actions of our shameless owner tell me he needs seriously looking at.

The list of unacceptable decisions he’s made over the years is endless, but his latest act of carelessness should not be tolerated, with today being yet another sad reminder that he’s STILL charging fans and refusing to issue refunds for season ticket payments – both for this season and the 2020/21 campaign.

Both he and the club continue to hide behind a potential takeover, instead of communicating with fans who are the ones left to suffer yet again – in more ways than one on this occasion.

These times are tough enough as it is, but leaving loyal fans out of pocket and in the dark when we now know the 2019/20 season will be played behind closed doors is unacceptable.

Other clubs have already issues refunds/stopped payments given most clubs are set to play over a quarter of their home league games behind closed doors. They’re showing us up.

Not only that, refunds are yet to be issued (or even addressed) for the tens of thousands of ticket sold for our postponed FA Cup clash with Manchester City at St James’ Park or the away trip to Bournemouth.

In typical Newcastle United style under Mike Ashley, we are the ones left behind. Ignored, neglected and cheated, with several protest groups such as the NUST and Toon For Change also seeing letters of complaint fall on deaf ears.

Is anyone listening? Or is he just going to keep on getting away with it while this ‘imminent’ takeover continues to drag on? This is a club that have just announced a profit after tax of £34.7m…

At a time where the Saudis are being scrutinised by every man and his dog on a daily basis, isn’t it time Mike Ashley was questioned about the club’s complete lack of communication and constant exploitation of fans?

If I was paying for a service and that service was no longer being provided in any other walk of life, I’d have every right to expect action to be taken and repercussions for the business involved.

The severity of the accusations may seem insignificant when compared to *some* of the claims being made about the Saudis, but it’s ironic that the Premier League have been inundated with complaints against our would-be new owners, all while they’ve allowed Mike Ashley to get away with murder for 13 years, watching on as he single handedly runs a football club into the ground after over a decade of neglect, betrayal and a total lack of investment and communication.

Protest groups have sent letters, statements have been released and there’s been widespread dismay voiced on social media. If no one will listen to that, perhaps it’s time a greater power gave our disgraced owner the kick up the backside he deserves.

  1. So Grant Shapps has announced today that wearing face masks will be compulsory from the 15th June – that’s about 1 month after I was saying to do that on here.
Why has it taken the government 4/5 weeks longer to see the obvious measure of what to do to protect public transport users!!.

I think we all know the answer to that mate.

Sir Patrick Vallance said on numerous occasions that the evidence was very limited and not clear that masks actually do any good. He’s the expert – or maybe Boris should be overriding the experts now eh?

  4. There hasnt been a consistent message on any of this from the get go. Wearing masks on public transport should have been a no-brainer from the start.

I agree with the sentiment behind the protests but I am not sure how many should be getting involved. The protesters are for the large part young and at the lowest risk but they can still catch CV-19 and pass it on, perhaps even to loved ones who are staying at home. I think they understand that they are at low risk, but are their friends, families and bosses.

Same with the police and National Guard over here. They are mostly young(ish) men under 50 so their risk is also low but they can take it home.

None of this makes any sense. I think there will be a spike but the problem is those who are asymtomatic passing it on to older and at risk people as the lockdown is eased.

  5. Eric, black people seem to have a higher risk of dying from Covid yet they aren’t too fussed about that if it means they can go an protest and attack a few cops. What’s wrong with them? Will people blame them or the government if there’s a big spike?

Stu – the evidence has always been there to say it doesn’t protect the wearer of the face mask – in fact Vance thought it would mean the wearer would touch their face more. But the mask reduces the risk of those around the wearer by up to 30 times more.
They didn’t go with it coz they didn’t trust people to touch their faces ?.

Yeah, Boris should have overridden him coz he’s the policy/rule setter. Only I don’t believe he does much of anything, sits back and blames science. Doesn’t question why.

Stu – well he has!!! Has the science changed in the last 4/5 weeks?.
Either Vance wasn’t 100% committed that masks were no good – in which case there is defo room to question it … or Johnson has eventually gone against the advice and is changing the rules from the 15th – meaning those who have used public transport over the last month have not been as protected as they should have been.

Kim – I think Werner was holding out for Lpool too, but good for Chelsea stepping in. He’s a good player, but I suspect Klopp knows the player better than us.

On the takeover, I think the PL are handling this disgraceful now. They must have a set criteria on what makes a bidder a suitable owner – that is all they should be measuring the Saudis against. That process should not be taking this long and the fact they STILL haven’t come to a decision is disrespectful and unprofessional. I know they have been trying to get the league going, but it’s been around 2 months now if not more. I’m not saying they should be allowing it – but they should have drawn a conclusion on this one way or another by now.

  13. Stuart: you defend the Govt whatever they do. Boris could murder babies in their beds and you would say they provoked him. I know you are a Tory, but most Tories can see when something is wrong or contradictory. You act like Trump’s press secretary.

The curfew in NYC was enforced by Police violence 2 nights ago. There was TV and cell phone footage of some beatings. I dont know why the Police would be so heavy handed when there is so much tension and scrutiny. To compound what took place the Democratic Mayor and Governor basically denied it had happened by saying the Police would never do that or they had not seen it. This is not quite as bad as Trump because they did not directly order this police violence, but I expect them to come out and apologize after they see overwhelming evidence.

I would say I am more left centre in my politics but if someone does wrong you have to say it was wrong. Defending Boris or Cummings for everything just makes me not want to listen to all of Stuart’s political views because I know what they will be before he says them.

  14. I don’t see much talk about the transfer window. Ideally we would want our new owners in place when it opens. That is currently June 10 but the deals aren’t ratified until July 1. Then it closes before next season would normally start sometime in August.

That is the normal schedule but the PL teams are pushing for an extension to as late as October and are also complaining that last year when the European leagues could do business for a further month that it put them at a disadvantage.

This is going to be another giant mess unless the PL changes the dates. It will hinder us more than other clubs if they dont make up their mind about the takeover soon. Stavely and Co will want their own people in to be doing the negotiations.

  16. I doubt if I am the first to say this but the takeover announcement will probably not happen until the PL starts up again. They need a smokescreen whatever they decide and they have the perfect chance on the weekend of June 19-21. We have waited 2 months already so I expect them to delay further, because:

Wed June 17 – PL restarts
Fri June 19 – Man U away at Spurs
Weekend – full slate of fixtures, wall to wall for like 9 hrs a day
Sun June 21 – Merseyside Derby

The papers will be going wild and the PL will hope they can sneak our decision partially under the radar. It will probably still be front/back page but will be sharing with Man U and Liverpool.

If the PL make an announcement now, we will see a 3 day sh!tstorm whatever they decide.

The journos will be at the matches as well and not sitting at home concocting and rehashing stories. Maybe Miguel Delaney will be moved to The Independent’s Political Desk where he belongs by then as well and even less people will read him.

I’ve not seen much outrage so far in the media even though police officers have been injured, buildings (including cenotaphs) have been vandalised and how many people will have caught Coronavirus seen as there was thousands upon thousands congregated in London alone. Without even mentioning the morons in Newcastle.

People can’t have it both ways. Either Coronavirus is important or protesting is more important. Which is it?

What disgusts me is that they’re getting away with it because it’s a sensitive subject and the fast majority of protestors are black. I find that abhorrent to be honest. We don’t live in a racist country and I don’t buy this solidarity bull **** with black people from the US. That doesn’t warrant the behaviour of the last few days.

We have black footballers that are revered, black ministers and many black MP’s, black singers and actors that are hero worshipped and have leading business people who have made it to the top of the tree. All that wouldn’t be possible if we were a racist country.

As for the protests – they shouldn’t be happening at all given everyone else is having to stop gathering together. Why are these idiots different? Do you think the police And media would turn a blind eye if 40,000 Liverpool fans turned up at the game they won the league? Of course they wouldn’t. They’d be absolutely slaughtered and many would be arrested.

We live in a country of hypocrisy and double standards and it breeds resentment.

    It’s a fair question .

Kim, this is something g I’m really interested in. Why do young black boys/men get stopped and searched more often than white counterparts? Only two reasons:

    1) The police are genuinely racist and stop black kids because they don’t like them due to their colour.
    2) The majority of certain crimes are carried out by black males in that particular area.

Which one I don’t know but one uncomfortable truth is that more than 70% if knife crime in London is between black males. Now, in any other world it would seem acceptable that police profile people based on the % of people who are carrying out these crimes. It wouldn’t make sense to stop and search 85 year old woman would it?

Whilst I accept there are clearly wankers in the police force who act a certain way because of someone’s skin colour, it really is the smallest of small minorities.

Actually this whole thing goes way deeper. We should be looking at why young black people are involved in proportionately more crime. Why do they come from single parent families in higher proportions than white males?

Our biggest problem is, we can’t look into this without being shouted down as racists. The term racist means nothing these days – it’s been demeaned to such an extent that people ignore it. People are called racist for telling a joke, for stopping and searching a black person, for not giving a black persons a job or simply for giving donations to Comic Relief (David Lammy we have to thank for that cracker).

Are we literally redefining the word racism?

I genuinely don’t know anybody, not one single person who actually thinks they’re better than someone just because they have a different coloured skin. That’s the definition of racism and I don’t know anybody like that. The tiniest of tiny minority of people think like that in this country thank God.

  39. Yes, georgio – the problem is finding out reasons why this is still happening. I believe the establishment are hamstrung by accusations of racism even at the very thought of trying to work out why, in many cases black males in particular have very different lives.

I happen to think we also have a problem with prominent black people. They constantly tell everyone who will listen how racist this country is. They essentially tell young black people that the establishment is against them, they’ll struggle to find work, they’ll struggle to make anything of themselves and will face constant oppression. Hearing that everyday of your life, is it any wonder young black people think “what’s the point in trying” and then the spiral starts. What black people show be saying is look at the lots of black people who have achieved what they wanted. MP’s, footballers, actors, TV personalities or prominent business people who achieve wonderful things. Why not hold them up as examples what can be achieved instead of telling young black people why they won’t achieve things…

putting words in my mouth again Stu.

It obviously has the same effect on health. The difference is one gathering is a noble cause about discrimination that has come to a head due to the murder of a black man ( not for the first time ) by police in US which has angered many people of all races and political views world wide. The other is a gathering of a clubs fan base who want to party. Massive difference.

At one time it was white gangs killing and maiming each other in London, Krays, Richardsons, Micky Green, more recently David Hunt . It stands to reason that the more diversified a city becomes that those ethnicity’s become involved.
The white gang lords used the black lads to do the dirty work before, now those lads are often the ones running things though white crime lords still control a lot of London.
The fathers of these lads are often doing time or dead because of involvement in said gangs.

  45. Well I agree with Stu on this one.

America is a different story – racism is deep rooted out there & police brutally is there for all to see. They were trying to pass a bill on the day of George Floyds memorial on linching ? and there was objections ??‍♂️.

So I’m talking solely about the UK here. Knife crime is everywhere in the UK and white people are getting stabbed and slashed in the NE regularly – it’s not just a black thing. But it certainly peaks with black gang crime in London. But what do the police do?. They stop and search and it’s racist – but if they don’t and these kids kill each other more than they are now and people will say the police don’t care coz it’s the blacks ??‍♂️.

This Country affords everyone opportunities to better themselves. Occupations like the police have quotas encouraging BAME, LGBT and women. Colleges and universities have quotas to encourage the same groups into higher education. The opportunity is there and I think to say it’s not in this country does 2 things – 1 gives an easy excuse for those who don’t put the work in and take the easy option (and plenty white people dont put the work in and take the easy option too by the way) and 2 I think it takes a lot of credit away from the kids who are from a single parent family and have worked hard and made difficult but correct decisions to better their circumstances.
If you want it, graft!!. If you’re a young black lad who’s dad is in jail because of gang crime – firstly, if he’s broken the law he should be in jail regardless of skin colour of parental responsibility. Should we be saying poor kid, what chance does he have, or should we be saying break the cycle son – don’t be that person. Your mam has suffered enough, go make her proud.

Every child has a free education, any child can get free school dinners in needed, every child has free health care. I don’t think we do anyone favours by giving them excuses. It’s hard, life can be hard, but if you are a child born in the UK, your chances of having a good life are vastly greater than those born in many other Countries – but regardless of colour or creed – you have to work hard for things earned honestly.

Kim, London is not a predominately black area.

I must say, it’s your attitude and reasoning that thwarts this from ever being solved. You aren’t prepared to accept realities because you think it will make you a racist. Hard realities need faced – otherwise we will never solve this and will never make it easier for black people to live in their own country ffs – without real racism or perceived racism!

  47. Stu, I said London is multi cultural and certain areas of it are predominately black just like say St Pauls is in Bristol .

I have accepted that there are black gangs, where have i not ?

As for being afraid of being racist 😆 😆 😆
You make a lot of assumptions about me, yet you know nothing of me really or my history.

  48. Generalisation, Kim. We can no longer have conversations about race without someone being called racist.

  50. Sharpy, Don’t you think many try to break the cycle ? It’s very difficult when you have people with preconceived ideas about where you live or your background .

Look at the recent attacks on Chinese students that have happened here because of Covid, our issue should be with China’s government not with it’s people .
Look at my Cities refusal to remove Edward Colstons statue, just because he gave to the poor and built schools, all on the back of slaves he traded in. What message is that sending to the black community in my City.

  51. Stu, no one has called you a racist and i certainly never would as i know nothing about you other than you have a poster of Boris on your wall . 😉

I never understood how Mark and Carol were ever conceived because – would you fck Maggie or Dennis? I am sure I wouldn’t whether I was gay or straight.

Stewie’s perfect threesome just entered my head. Thankfully not naked.

    Boris, Maggie and Dom.

Flouncy haircut, polyester Marks and Spencer lady suit and a 53 year old in a hoodie or beenie. What’s not to love?

Kim – pockets of f@ckwits that attacked some Chinese people – but isolated incidents and died down pretty quickly.
No Country will be 100% perfect, I’d never suggest that. But I don’t believe this Country is largely racist – if it was, then the same Chinese people you talk of wouldn’t be here.

My cousin is married to an Italian lad. He father came over from Italy with his brother with barely a pot to pee in, but they were bother barbers. They worked hard and ended up marrying English girls, and he had 2 sons. By the time they were adults the father had earned enough money to help them set up clothing shops in the NE and they have done very well out of it.
This Country allowed an uneducated barber from Italy the chance to change things for his family and set the next generation up – but he worked bloody hard for it. Sadly he is no longer with us but he was one of the most honest, genuine people I’d ever met. Did he experience some racism along the way – definitely – it was the UK in the 70’s and 80’s. Has his son – no, not one bit, because the Country HAS changed – it’s not perfect and there are still idiots, but it has got a lot better.
But it’s not something holding people back or stopping their opportunities – hard work and endeavour.

The statues are a subjective thing Kim. Times were different back then. They Colstons WAS for the good he done with his money – not for his slave trading. Slave trading is a real stain on our history, but pulling the statue down won’t change that – there’s an argument it’s serves as a reminder. Auschwitz is another example – should it be closed?. I’m not saying you are wrong, just saying that there is no statue in Britain that exists glorifying racism or celebrating slave trade. If there was id be the first saying take it down.

  55. The slave trade was something every rich country did in them times. In fact, the Romans were past masters of it and let’s be honest, most of their slaves where in fact white. Don’t hear much outrage at that… We should never judge the actions of others 300-400 years by today’s moral standards. Nobody mentions the fact that we were the first country to abolish slavery. Too positive?

Our history is a main reason why we are a re wealthy country. Why we have a decent health service, why we can educate our children, protect our citizens with a world class armed forces and can afford to pay people who are unfortunate. Maybe we should forgo all that because of our past? Should we all go live like North Koreans because 400 years ago our government did bad things by today standards?

Maybe Italy should do the same as them terrible Romans did all sorts of bad things. Forget the good, it’s all about the bad.

  56. Sharpy , it’s an interesting point you make about serving as a reminder, re the statue. I was having that very conversation last night with Lews carer, we were conflicted over it, part of us thinking it had to go because it does upset a lot of people black and white here, yet it is a reminder of what went on and that we should never hide that fact.
They are renaming Colston hall after its refurbishment and there are calls to change colston street too.

I’ve just looked him up, but Bristol history isn’t great ?.
We are talking back in the 1600s Kim and slavery is awful but schools and hospitals he built remain to this day.

Ironically, I wonder how many black Bristolians were born and educated in those hospitals and schools?

Churchill was said to be racist. Do we pull his statue down?.
