The Toon’s forgotten men – Five faces who deserve more recognition at Newcastle United

The Ashley era at Newcastle United has seen the relationship between the board and the fans deteriorate, leaving many of us to feel alienated by our own club.

Respected figures like Kevin Keegan, Alan Shearer and Jonas Gutierrez have been tossed aside and dismissed, and one thing our new owners could do to immediately gain the fans approval would be to rightfully honour some of the heroic icons from the past.

Despite having their own issues, one thing that Arsenal have done well in recent years is commemorate their past heroes with statues outside the Emirates Stadium. Historic greats like Ken Friar and Herbet Chapman stand alongside modern superstars like Thierry Henry to provide an education for young Gunners while they enter their 21st century stadium.

This is an idea Staveley & Co could replicate and develop further, to help inspire younger generations of Magpies on their way to the ground who are potentially unaware of our own fantastic history.

While older folk and hardcore Toon nuts will know of those featured on the list, these five selected to join Wor Jackie, Sir Bobby, and Shearer himself may sound unfamiliar to some of the Toon Army’s younger generation of today.

1. Stan Seymour

Born in County Durham, Seymour is one of the most important people in our club’s history. After a successful playing career, winning the league and FA Cup in the 1920s, he later managed our club to another cup success before going on to become chairman, rightly earning him the title ‘Mr Newcastle’ for being the only man to hold all three roles at St James’ Park.

Jackie Milburn once said: “There is a great debt owed by Newcastle United to Stan Seymour for all of his services to the club”. Seymour is a true club legend who deserves a statue – or even a stand – dedicated to him in his honour.

2. Hughie Gallacher

Scottish goal-machine Gallacher is the most prolific forward in our club’s history and captained us to our most recent league triumph in 1926-27.

Rivals Sunderland were contenders for the league that season and were defeated 1-0 at St James’ Park thanks to a Gallacher strike in front of a record 67,211 crowd. He left us to join Chelsea three years later having scored 143 goals in 174 games in a black-and-white shirt – with a strike conversion rate of 82%.

3. Joe Harvey

There is a plaque in memory of Harvey outside St James’ Park, but for his services to our club we think he deserves more. He is our club’s longest serving captain and manager, and is another man who won trophies for us both on the pitch and on the touchline.

A sergeant in WWII, he helped transform the club’s fortunes after the war with his leadership qualities, captaining us to three FA Cups in the 1950s when just 10 years earlier we were on the verge of the third division in what was Newcastle United’s own darkest hour. His stint as manager saw him lift the Inter Cities Fairs cup in 1969, making him still to this day the last Toon boss to win a major honour.

4. Frank Watt

Referred to as the first ‘unofficial’ manager of Newcastle, Watt was club secretary for 40 years between 1895 and 1935. Football managers as we know it weren’t a thing in the late 19th and early 20th century, and clubs were run by a committee which was chaired by the club’s secretary.

During Watt’s tenure-ship, he led us through the most successful period in our club’s history, winning four league titles and three FA Cups. He actually signed three people on this list, Lawrence, Gallacher and ‘Mr Newcastle’ Stan Seymour, which demonstrates just how much of an impact he had on the history of our club. If anybody deserves recognition for his achievements representing the Toon, it’s Frank Watt.

5. Jimmy Lawrence

Our record appearance holder played 496 times between the sticks for us in the early 20th century, meaning he had a pivotal role in the three league triumphs in the 1900s. Lawrence represented us until the age of 43, appearing in five FA cup finals, being victorious in 1910.

A bizarre fact is that he thought he was born in 1885, and used this date when signing for the club in 1904. Research since has proved he was born six years earlier, which also makes him our oldest ever player too. These two records are unlikely to be beaten any time soon, which further adds to his legendary status at our club.

  2. You know what we should do for next Saturday if there is anybody to contact at NUFC – have Wor Flags put up the flags they have in storage. Have fans give up old scarves and shirts to put on seats.

Anything to have it not be stale and vapid Sports Direct signs only and at least look a bit more like a Toon game.

  3. Stu – it’s disgusting mate. Part of me thinks pull the cops out and let the idiots do what they want to each other.
I know some have turned out for a peaceful protest, but they must know that the peacefulness has gone from this now. If they have gone into London they must have expected this and they still went anyway – can’t claim to be a victim if you knowingly walk into the bear pit.

There’s only the cops who have no choice to be there.

  4. It was stupid putting a 5pm curfew in place when you can’t really enforce it. These idiots don’t turn up and set an alarm for what time they need to clear off – they will purposely stay longer!!.

  6. What they should say rather than YOU be off the streets by 5pm – they should say WE’LL be off the streets by 5pm – our cops will not be there, they will go safely home to their families. If you choose to stay out on your head be it – if you require medical treatment from public order clashes, you pay for your medical treatment.

Sky News interviewed a 16yr old black kid who was talking all tough – I stood my ground, I wasn’t scared for my safety … no coz you had an army of police officers there ready to protect you – the bloody racists.

Dare I ask why their parents are letting a 16yr old into London when all this has been kicking off over the last week??. I’d be asking the same question if the kid was white by the way.

What do these people actually want?

To cause chaos Stu. The is no end goal in all of this, just cause as much of a disruption as they can – the thrill of the conflict.
I suspect plenty on either side will look at what’s happening in Seattle and carve to have that kind of anarchy.

I said the other day, my feeling is there are only 2 types of people – good and not so good, and each come in all shapes and sizes.
We are definitely witnessing the not so good in all of their ugliest form in London at the moment.

  9. Regardless what you think of Colston and whether his statue was right to stay in place or not – what’s happening in London is a direct result of allowing a mob to rip down that statue.
In allowing that to happen, it’s brought all of the ‘statue protectors’ out to the streets. I use that turn because whilst many are far rights – there are also some who aren’t and just don’t want to see statues of the likes of Baden Powell damaged or toppled.

      (Quote)

  10. Sharpy – you’re right. The fact the police stood and actually watched the mob break the law by pulling a statue down and then desecrating statues in London has firstly given them the confidence to continue and push the boundaries further as I’m pretty sure the police are shitting themselves because they’ll be accused of racism is they do their job and actually stop it and with force if necessary and secondly it’s given the wa*nkers like the EDL the excuse they wanted by saying the police aren’t doing their jobs so we are going to do it.

Ultimately the PC world we live in is coming home to roost. We were warned…

  11. Oh dear. Two middle-aged white dudes are outraged that not everyone holds the same values as them. Shock. Horror. The world will never recover.

Another friendly win. That’s two in a row. We are on a roll. I’m really looking forward to seeing some football again. I’m pleased to say that our walking football games started up after an almost 4-months lay-off last week. It is so good to be able to kick a ball around. Even at my age the thrill never goes away.

  12. On topic …

I wouldn’t have thought the first 3 people mentioned were ‘forgotten’. But maybe I’m just showing my age (and proving I don’t have dementia).

Nice article. Would love to see more of this sort of thing. I like the historical angle. Personal experience and tactical/statistical analysis are also good articles. I used to enjoy Premandup’s articles on statistics.

But this is good. I hope there are more to come .

  13. Sharpy – Don’t we live in a rather odd world where people are criticised for being outraged that people openly break the law without retribution. Strange.

Also strange that a term “middle class white dude” is used as an insult and is deemed perfectly acceptable but terms used about black people is deemed outrageous and racist.

Thanks, Bris. You’ve proved my point brilliantly. 🙂

I see one of the idiots p!ssed on the memorial of the cop who died fighting off the terrorist attack in London. Who wouldn’t find that disgusting?!.

It was disgusting Sharpy, must of been really upsetting for his family to see that image.

Isn’t it sad how only a few weeks back the whole country was united in doing the right thing for the good of everyone no matter what colour, creed or religion .
It was nice and a welcome change from all the tribal **** of Brexit and the election.
Now we are all at one anothers throats again and all that good feeling of unity is gone , very sad.

Kim – we all had a common cause and most people bought into it, but we’ve since learned a good few didn’t feel the need. I think that’s the uniqueness of the NHS – it seems to be the one thing everyone genuinely gets behind.

  24. There are a few reasons why I won’t be engaging in a conversation, Sharpy. But let me indulge you a bit.

First, and most importantly, my opinions are more nuanced than the alt-right sloganeering that passes as comment on here (sometimes). The marketing (aka propaganda) arm of the ruling elite has perfected that side of things and that’s where I prefer to direct comments (and if you check back you’ll see that to be the case). They aren’t aimed at you as a person. They are aimed at the machine that creates the views you espouse. And, well, it gets complicated from there because I’m not saying you don’t have free will or that you can’t think for yourself or whatever. Life isn’t straightforward. Things aren’t black and white. The world can’t be reduced to a single value system.

Bear in mind that I find some of the comments coming from you, Stu and to lesser extent Sidekick as being highly offensive (and I’m not talking about the personal attacks here – they are just petty, silly and untrue). I find them to be anti-humanity. They are part of the wider agenda that perpetuates inequality; that condemn places like Africa to poverty, hunger, starvation, disease, death for kids; that are propelling the planet to a climate Armageddon; that make ordinary people struggle from day to day so that a rich few can wield ever greater power; that is full of lies and corruption.

How many times do you hear people saying things like money has ruined the game, we should have more respect for others, there’s no honesty in the world, whatever happened to dignity? And yet when it comes to elections people vote for those very same people who are creating the very same world we despair for. It happens all over. I particularly know UK, USA and Australia, so my comments are mainly about these places, but just look at uprisings against governments in just about every part of the globe … clearly there is a problem with power elites.

The reality of things in this world is far more complex than a single-minded middle-class value system can capture. Social movements rise from historical perspectives, political comment is an expression of the milieu in which people live. That obviously needs to be unpacked more, but it surely is becoming obvious that I could never do justice to my opinions in a few basic sentences.

Secondly, this isn’t the forum to talk about politics in any depth. It might work for populist one-liners, but it isn’t for me. I’m too interested in matters of truth to engage in such reductionist claptrap.

Thirdly, I’m not that committed to this forum and any conversation between us would become a long drawn-out erratic affair that would bore everybody else and probably be less than satisfactory to us both. This is the one and only long post I will make on this subject. I’m not going to get into a debate.

Bris – nor and I asking you to mate, and I am genuinely grateful that you have taken the time to write this.

This may or may not give you heartburn but I am reading Jordan Peterson’s 12 rules of life. One of the rules is assume the person you are listening to knows something you don’t. I’d go for a pint with you and whilst we may not agree on everything, I’d certainly listen.

You say that you a few sentences can do your complex views justice, yet presume mine are summed up in my posts on here. They have been plenty posts where I’ve thought, that doesn’t cover everything, but if I put more it’ll be war and peace – and others where I’ve chose not to post at all coz it would go way off track.

The footy kicks back off this week anyway mate, and whilst the politics will rumble on, hopefully this site can go back to having footy to discuss.

I think you will find that almost all of my political posts are about the EU.
In June 1975 I was in a minority that voted not to join the common market. We joined immediately after that vote.
In June 2016 I was in the majority of people who voted to leave the EU. Four years later we are still tied to their rules and regulations and we will not be free of them until 1 January 2021 — if we are lucky.
With you being Australian I am surprised that you are concerned about UK politics.
I have noted your concern on poverty in Africa. I have knowledge that once we are free of the EU we will be doing a lot more trade with African and Caribbean Countries. Hopefully the UK can help those Countries to be more prosperous.

    Dubravka

    Manquillo Fernandez Lascelles Rose

    Hayden Shelvey

    Lazaro Almiron Joelinton St Max

But I’ve got a real fondness for the lad after that Man Utd goal, daft I know. But there’s not been many moments like that with NUFC in recent years – probably going all the way back to Tiote scoring against Arsenal.

Matty doesn’t seem your typical mercenary to be fair. His reaction after the Man Utd game was more like the fulfilment of a childhood dream rather than a kid seeing pound signs. It’s awful to think that there are still kids who aren’t guaranteed 1 proper meal a day – really it’s ridiculous Rashford even needed to make the case. But good on him. I know a couple of mates who are out of work and their other halves don’t work yet they have never once not been able to feed their children.

The notion there’s 600,000 children like this is incredible. We have an awful lot of gullible people in this country.

  48. I read The Chronicle quotes on this WTO report and it tells us nothing that we didnt already know. Do the PL really want to get into a fight with the only serious competition for the rights to games in the middle east and Africa?

The report is just a load of legal mumbo jumbo and the PL could easily pass the takeover without anybody but lawyers batting an eyelid. It is all fcking semantics now if this is what it hinges on. The WTO talks about the “Saudi State” but then you have to make a connection to bin Salmon, and the PIF which is not specified.

  50. Depending on who is defining the WTO report Saudis either responsible for it or didn’t do enough to stop it.

PL within touching distance of solving piracy issue. Reject the takeover and there goes any possibility of solving it. That’s why it will get approved.

Ice – I’m starting to think that’s the PLs hope – drag our heels and they’ll pull out then we won’t need to reject and upset them ??‍♂️.

Hope I’m wrong and they eventually get it done. I just want it put to rest either way now.

  57. 117k deaths in the US attributed to Covid-19. News channels saying it will reach 200k by October. That’s a normal flu season amount and they are causing a panic. 3 MILLION people died in the US in 2018. I am not trying to treat this lightly, but this panic is getting out of control now.

Economies have to open. Protect the people most at risk but FFS get a grip governments! The cure that you are putting us through is worse than the disease.
