The Ashley era at Newcastle United has seen the relationship between the board and the fans deteriorate, leaving many of us to feel alienated by our own club.
Respected figures like Kevin Keegan, Alan Shearer and Jonas Gutierrez have been tossed aside and dismissed, and one thing our new owners could do to immediately gain the fans approval would be to rightfully honour some of the heroic icons from the past.
Despite having their own issues, one thing that Arsenal have done well in recent years is commemorate their past heroes with statues outside the Emirates Stadium. Historic greats like Ken Friar and Herbet Chapman stand alongside modern superstars like Thierry Henry to provide an education for young Gunners while they enter their 21st century stadium.
This is an idea Staveley & Co could replicate and develop further, to help inspire younger generations of Magpies on their way to the ground who are potentially unaware of our own fantastic history.
While older folk and hardcore Toon nuts will know of those featured on the list, these five selected to join Wor Jackie, Sir Bobby, and Shearer himself may sound unfamiliar to some of the Toon Army’s younger generation of today.
1. Stan Seymour
Born in County Durham, Seymour is one of the most important people in our club’s history. After a successful playing career, winning the league and FA Cup in the 1920s, he later managed our club to another cup success before going on to become chairman, rightly earning him the title ‘Mr Newcastle’ for being the only man to hold all three roles at St James’ Park.
Jackie Milburn once said: “There is a great debt owed by Newcastle United to Stan Seymour for all of his services to the club”. Seymour is a true club legend who deserves a statue – or even a stand – dedicated to him in his honour.
2. Hughie Gallacher
Scottish goal-machine Gallacher is the most prolific forward in our club’s history and captained us to our most recent league triumph in 1926-27.
Rivals Sunderland were contenders for the league that season and were defeated 1-0 at St James’ Park thanks to a Gallacher strike in front of a record 67,211 crowd. He left us to join Chelsea three years later having scored 143 goals in 174 games in a black-and-white shirt – with a strike conversion rate of 82%.
3. Joe Harvey
There is a plaque in memory of Harvey outside St James’ Park, but for his services to our club we think he deserves more. He is our club’s longest serving captain and manager, and is another man who won trophies for us both on the pitch and on the touchline.
A sergeant in WWII, he helped transform the club’s fortunes after the war with his leadership qualities, captaining us to three FA Cups in the 1950s when just 10 years earlier we were on the verge of the third division in what was Newcastle United’s own darkest hour. His stint as manager saw him lift the Inter Cities Fairs cup in 1969, making him still to this day the last Toon boss to win a major honour.
4. Frank Watt
Referred to as the first ‘unofficial’ manager of Newcastle, Watt was club secretary for 40 years between 1895 and 1935. Football managers as we know it weren’t a thing in the late 19th and early 20th century, and clubs were run by a committee which was chaired by the club’s secretary.
During Watt’s tenure-ship, he led us through the most successful period in our club’s history, winning four league titles and three FA Cups. He actually signed three people on this list, Lawrence, Gallacher and ‘Mr Newcastle’ Stan Seymour, which demonstrates just how much of an impact he had on the history of our club. If anybody deserves recognition for his achievements representing the Toon, it’s Frank Watt.
5. Jimmy Lawrence
Our record appearance holder played 496 times between the sticks for us in the early 20th century, meaning he had a pivotal role in the three league triumphs in the 1900s. Lawrence represented us until the age of 43, appearing in five FA cup finals, being victorious in 1910.
A bizarre fact is that he thought he was born in 1885, and used this date when signing for the club in 1904. Research since has proved he was born six years earlier, which also makes him our oldest ever player too. These two records are unlikely to be beaten any time soon, which further adds to his legendary status at our club.

Stu, not sure you realise that living on universal credit is no picnic for families. Once utility bills and rent are paid there is little left for food. That’s where the phrase heat or eat came from, especially for pensioners and the frail.
My best mate runs a breakfast club and after school club, she has told me plenty of horror stories.
Believe me mate, there is plenty of families on the breadline despite managing their money really well, most parents tend to feed the kids and go without a meal themselves.

Btw Kim I know there are families out there that do struggle and they should get help but you must think I arrived on the last banana boat if you expect me to believe there’s so many. Especially when claiming benefits is worth more than working sometimes in this country. I also notice an awful lot of people still smoke and have Sky tv. I’d have thought food was a higher priority.

Stu – I accept there are some people out there like that, but there are a lot of families who aren’t.
Money gets tighter for everyone every year. I know every bill I have gets increased by around 5% but my wage certainly doesn’t – and I doubt UC does either.
But those you mention that spend on other things – that’s not the kids fault. At least these are food vouchers – they can’t be spent on anything else.

The amount of homes I have walked I to where the Mum andDad will be day smoking a fresh pack of 20, kids running around feral with no carpets on the floor – no fresh food but freezer full from Iceland and the latest PS model being played on a 60 inch TV.
Unfortunately there IS enough money supplied by benefits to feed every kid in this Country, that’s the whole point in it – but the parents mis manage this money and have problems prioritising necessities over luxuries.
That does not mean that the children should therefore go without – it’s not their fault. But perhaps the system needs an overhaul so that those parents cannot spend food money on non essentials – perhaps food vouchers instead of cash.

Sham – yeah, there are those people but there are also those who are holding down low paid jobs and not receiving benefits. You can analyse the lives of those people to and no doubt find bad decision making has resulted in their current predicaments. Usually single mothers how have had bad relationships and got pregnant from them – many who have had a string of bad relationships resulting in multiple kids – why keep doing it then?. It’s an easy question when you’re not in that place. They should tie her tubes is another one ??♂️.
Some people make bad decisions and some people get taken advantage of. Not everyone is a 40 a day cider swiller. But the kids have no choice in any of it.

I would also say that the fact personal economics isn’t a compulsory part of the curriculum is graceful as well. Maths and English yes (though I can’t say I’ve given Shakespeare a second thought til now) but science – 3 lots of it?!?!!!. Yes there will be some jobs that need it – but every kid will one day benefit from learning the value of money and how to best use it.
I would also argue the case for basic home economics too. Learning about nutritious food and how to make a meal from scratch – cheaper and healthier than ready meals ??♂️.

That WTO document is 196 pages long. I have read novels that are shorter than that. I have read summaries and it is all legalese. No wonder the PL lawyers are taking an age if they are buried under that junk as well as Khashoggi’s fiancee’s interference and of course Bein sports. Still think they are waiting for the smokescreen of the football starting up again and particularly this weekend when it will be wall to wall.
The lawyers who have looked at the PL rules in detail and now the WTO epic seem to be unanimous in their belief that there is nothing to block this deal. If it DOES NOT go through I dont think the Saudis will leave it there. Bein Sports is a part of Al Jazeera which is a Qatari state sponsored propaganda outlet. We would be stuck in a legal battle for years and therefore stuck in limbo because Ashley clearly wants out.

Just saw the Sheffield Utd lineup. Wasn’t shocked to see that I hardly know any of their players because they are never on TV here. I knew Henderson their goalie because he is on loan from Man U and Ollie McBurnie, the non-scoring striker (the white Joelinton). That was it.
I am bringing it up because that is who we play on Sunday so it will be interesting for me to watch them.

Only managed to see half the Sheffield Utd game but I did notice they are another of these high press teams. Hopefully, Brucie has devised a plan that does not involve parking 9 players on the 18 yard line and hoofing it to Joelinton. We have had trouble with these types of teams this season and have relied on Dubravka to save us (literally and figuratively).
The plan also cannot be to have Miggy or St Max take on 3 players to get us to the half way line either. We have to have some tactical solution to this bloody high press. They are not Liverpool or Man City. None of their players would even make the bench there.
If we play Shelvey we probably have to play Dwight as they like to play together.
Let’s give them something to think about and not react to what they do which has been a fatal flaw in Bruce’s game plans although he has got lucky. Luck usually evens itself out though so we have to change. He says he is going to, so let’s see.

Been saying for a couple of weeks that the PL were looking for a smokescreen to issue their verdict on our takeover and that was the resumption of play and especially the Merseyside derby on Sunday. They probably wanted the WTO report out of the way as well but the fact the Foreign Secretary is now weighing in means this is happening next week. My gut feeling is Monday or Tuesday. No inside knowledge, just a gut feeling and I think it will go through as the Govt seem to be in favour – if you read between the lines.

So, the latest w@nker to weigh in on the takeover is Angus McNeil, SNP MP for the bloody Outer Hebrides. This is the smallest constituency in the land with 21k registered voters, or to put it another way, 2/5 of the capacity of SJP. What does any of this have to do with him? He is on some trade committee but the Govt always give out token places on meaningless committees to the SNP to make them feel relevant/important.
This guys opinion is about as important as Danny Mills’ or Michael Chopra’s (i.e. not at all). The Govt have already said they are not interfering but then the foreign secretary gave the takeover a thinly veiled blessing.

I checked where this guy’s constituency is and it is 270 miles from Glasgow and takes 8 hours to get to from Glasgow.
It is 418 miles from Newcastle and takes 10 hours to get to.
If you were to drive there from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia it is 4,500 miles and takes 3 days and 5 hours nonstop.
And this guy is commenting on the NUFC takeover 🙂

A friend of mine was a former New Zealand MP and was Chairman of the Aviation Committee there. Even though he was interested in the subject he told me it was mainly about getting free junkets around the world, being wined and dined and getting free gifts of booze, watches etc. A bit like the Govt version of FIFA. Bruce is supposedly known to be a good man manager – but he’s not really shown that this week.
Firstly when talking about Lascelles having a baby – he didn’t even know if it was a boy or a girl – that’s his club captain and he can’t even be bothered to know the gender of his new born.
Then today he’s talking about Matty Longstaff and his hope that he stays – local lad, from North or South Shields or wherever. He’s from North Shields Steve – it’s a small thing, but it goes a long way in convincing our brightest prospect that you have an interest in him.
It won’t be the reason he stays or goes, but it’s not hard to know where your local lads are from.
I wonder if he knows he’s got one foot out the door and he’s passed caring ??♂️.

This guidance on Covid-19 is completely confusing. You have pubs and businesses opening up but football games played behind closed doors. Trump has a rally for 20,000 people in a convention centre where they will be packed close together and then Carnegie Hall (NYC equivalent of Newcastle City Hall) cancels all concerts for the rest of 2020.
Luckily, I live in an area that has been minimally affected by CV-19. Not sure if it is what the state has done or demographics or the fact I am 5 miles from downtown Chicago where all of the tourists go. But I am still completely confused!!!! Every time I turn on the news to see what I should be doing someone on there has a completely different opinion to what the last person said.
And then I see Germany and Denmark with totally different instructions to the UK and the US.
Me and Stewie Thatcher dont agree on a lot except shutting down economies for this is probably worse than letting it run its course. But I would like some clear advice for what a middle aged man should be doing and not all of these contradictions I see in the news.
I have to stop watching the news. Luckily there is football on, starting now with N’wich-S’ton 🙂

It is interesting to see how bad they are against Southampton who are not a very good team. When Shelvey was playing well for us against S’ton we took them apart, even before they went down to 10 men. It was only after Jonjo went off the boil that they had a look in.
I don’t think we have bad players. Just lack a goalscorer and Brucie’s tactics have made us look bad, statistically and in every other way.

80% of deaths have been for people over 65
40% of deaths have been people in nursing homes
Obviously, there is probably another stat for deaths with underlying health conditions but I haven’t seen that. What it says though is that we SHOULD be opening up the economy but should also put most of our resources towards those at the highest risk. Nobody had a fcking plan and they still dont. They have ruined the world economy for a minimum of 2 years because of their incompetence. I am not surprised with Trump in charge.
It tells me that as a person in their mid-50s with no health issues whatsoever that I can resume life again and go out and even socialize if I want. I dont have elderly or sick relatives to transmit this virus to so I will not be putting others at risk. I will wear a mask for extra protection and to show others I take this seriously. But we do have to get past this now, even if the number of cases go up.
