Star striker ‘could sign’ for NUFC this summer, whether £300m takeover happens or not – Report

At times it may be the silly season when it comes to players we’re being linked with, but in the case of the Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard it may not be so silly.

Once again, it’s our local paper The Chronicle that leads the way on the link but plenty of others are too.

On the highly rated Transfermarkt website we are given as the leading contender for his signature although there are plenty of other clubs reportedly interested. What is intriguing about this one is that it seems to be a possibility that could happen even if the takeover doesn’t.

It’s quoted that the current scouting team have him very high on their wish list and have recommended him to the Club. Personally, I can believe that as he ticks a lot of boxes for the way the club thinks at the present.

Mind you does that mean all the others we’ve been linked with are mere rumours and speculation and could/would only happen if the takeover occurs? A real speculation that question BUT, business has to be done whatever the status of the ownership.

Which brings me back to Edouard. He’s the right age at 22, has real ability and has shown that at Celtic and has potential to become even better. Plus, his price might be accessible to the current regime and definitely to the hopefully incoming one.

What would he cost? Well he’s valued at ‘£12.15m’ by Transfermarkt but he’ll cost much more than that. Given that Celtic paid just shy of £10m for him I doubt they’d let him go for that valuation. But double it and that might be an offer that they can’t resist given the state many clubs will find themselves in post COVID-19.

Then to the player himself. He’s indicated that he’s happy and willing to stay at Celtic but is that because he’s guaranteed playing time? Probably which means that if he does go anywhere, he wants to play. Now given that the top 4 or even 6 in the Premiership seem to favour more expensive options it might be hard for him to breakthrough in some of those squads. Although I do think Leicester would be a viable option for Edouard.

So, a first-team place beckons at St. James and that could be the deciding factor, with the Scottish Mail also claiming recently that he sees St James’ Park as an ‘attractive option’. That and the fact that both regimes seem to like him and the length of time the takeover is taking and the closeness of the transfer window opening could influence this as well.

I follow the SPL and St. Mirren so I have seen a lot of Edouard. He’s a specimen there’s no doubt about that. At 6’ 2” he’s big and imposing but with a nice touch as well. He’s quick and can finish.

Across 2019/20 he’s played in 45 games and scored 27 goals and had 19 assists. Impressive figures and one that might mean he’s worth a punt for either ownership and definitely a more realistic target than some that it’s been rumoured we’re aiming at.
