Newcastle ‘reject’ the chance to sign star player’s son as he completes bizarre move elsewhere

A few weeks ago, it was reported that Newcastle United were considering a move to sign Thomas Robert on a free agent.

Thomas, the 19-year-old son of former NUFC star Laurent, was said to be attracting interest from a host of European clubs, including Celtic, however Lee Ryder has now revealed that we opted against offering the Frenchman a contract at the club.

His final destination has now been confirmed, and it perhaps explains why we rejected the former Montpellier winger, with him signing for Scottish THIRD division side Airdrie.

It’s claimed he rejected bigger offers and opted for Airdrie to gain ‘regular first-team football’, however this eventual move makes you wonder if talk of interest from the likes of ourselves, Celtic, Rangers, Nice, Rennes and a few Bundesliga sides ever REALLY had much truth in it?

After all, it’s tough to believe he rejected a four-year deal with Ligue 1 side Montpellier and then a chance to play U-23 football at a top level club elsewhere all to guarantee himself game time at senior level in the third tier of Scottish football?

A bizarre one to say the least, but we wish Laurent’s son all the best!

If he can become anything like the player his Dad was, Airdrie might just have pulled off the bargain of 2020!
