Watford 2-1 Newcastle: Second half collapse & awful errors cost careless NUFC yet again

A pathetic second half performance and two awful goals to give away for Newcastle United, seeing Watford come from behind to win 2-1 at today’s early kick off at Vicarage Road.

We started strongly and went into the break with a well deserved lead via another Dwight Gayle goal, but a pitiful effort in the final 45 cost us, with us giving away two avoidable penalties and totally collapsing to gift Watford the win.

A response to Wednesday’s 5-0 hammering was needed, and it looked on the cards at one stage, but a combination of awful substitutions, careless mistakes and a total lack of intensity made the difference in the end, with it seeming clear as the game went on that one side were battling to stay up and the other were on the beach.

Bruce made five changes, not only dropping the five-man defence but bringing in Saint-Maximin, Almiron, Lascelles, Manquillo and Gayle in for Krafth, Yedlin, Bentaleb, Lazaro and Joelinton.

One slight surprise was Fabian Schar being handed another start in midfield following another ponderous display against Man City, however it was good to see our two best attackers back, a deserved recall for Gayle and the return of our reliable skipper.

Before kick off, the players showed their respects to the late Jack Charlton with a minutes silence for a true legend of the game and great man who sadly passed away today at the age of 85.

We surrendered from the off on Wednesday but started much the better side here, with a wicked early cross from Saint-Maximin only just evading Almiron on the three minute mark and the Paraguyan then smashing a half-volley straight at Foster moments later after the hosts failed to deal with a dangerous Shelvey corner.

We had 66% of the ball on the 10-minute mark (which was about 50% more than we had at this stage of the City game!), but Watford very nearly opened the scoring via a Welbeck shot that bobbled against the near post and would’ve spun over the line if it wasn’t for Lascelles being in the right place at the right time to clear – not for the first time in the opening stages!

Just before the first drinks break we then broke the deadlock.

A fast flowing attack forced a corner, and from that Matt Ritchie whipped in a cross to the front post. Fernandez met it and looked like was going to glance a brilliant header into the far corner, only for Gayle to gamble and arrive onto the scene later and tap into an empty net.

He hadn’t scored a single goal in 12 appearances before lockdown, but has now had a hand in four (three goals and one assist) in five appearances since football returned.

0-1 Newcastle and a deserved lead for Steve Bruce’s side on the balance of play.

Saint-Maximin almost made it two before, bursting through on goal after latching onto a brilliant Gayle flick, however his outside of the foot finish was blocked by an onrushing Foster.

Half time and we went in 0-1 up. A positive performance so far, with us looking much sharper at both ends of the pitch following the return of key trio Lascelles, Almiron and ASM.

Watford looked poor and a side we could finish off in the second half if we stayed focused and kept at it, but we handed them a needless route back into it just five minutes into the restart.

A clumsy bit of defending from Ritchie sent Femenia tumbling in the box and Deeney did the rest from the spot, smashing a penalty straight down the middle and past Dubravka.

A game we had looked comfortable in was suddenly level and we were very nearly 2-1 down just moments later, with a horror pass from Fernandez giving Deeney a clear run at goal – only for his powerful low shot to be hit straight at Dubravka.

We were all over the shop. A game we threatened to win quite comfortably at one stage was now looking far more likely to go the other way.

A drinks break arrived – and boy did we need it – but it felt like Bruce needed to make changes with 20 minutes to go. He made one, bringing Joelinton on for Matt Ritchie, but we continued to look second best.

Then, on the 80-minute mark a moment of madness from Manquillo gave Watford the perfect chance to make it 2-1, with the Spaniard getting the wrong side of Sarr and pulling him down needlessly to give Deeney another big chance from the spot.

Needless to say, he wellied it down the middle past Dubravka and gave Watford the lead. More awful defending to complete what had been a pathetic

From that point onwards we looked lost and largely toothless in attack, with Bruce’s aimless substitutions doing nothing to get us back into a game we’d let slip so easily.

There was a desperate push to get an equaliser – which consisted of little other than give it to Saint-Maximin and hope for the best or pump it long to our big men in the box – but Watford held on to secure an unlikely win from 0-1 down.

Just as I thought we’d responded to Wednesday’s hammering at Man City as we sat pretty at half-time, we sat back, put our flips flops on and made error after error in the second 45 to prove me sadly wrong.

We’ve shown signs of real improvement at times since football resumed, however this has been a damaging week for anyone believing Steve Bruce is the man to take us forward, whether new owners arrive or not.

Based on what we saw in that second half, this season can’t end quick enough – and a few big changes need to be made if and when a Saudi takeover is finally approved.

  1. For me both penalties were clear cut.
This squad has a character problem, they down tools when the pressure is notched up. Embarrassing.

Gayle is doing well and is our only actual capable striker. Joe looks better out wide or supporting in behind but he is not a £40m player and would have no meaningful role under new ownership imo.

Rose can go back to Spurs. I guarantee once he is handed a contract he will stop putting in the effort.

Why we are playing a CB as a CM is beyond me.

Shelley, Ritchie, Might, st Max, the Longstaffs, Lasclelles, Lejune, Fernandez and Gayle all could have decent roles under new owners. Everyone else is dispensable. Some more than others. Schar probably getting a hard time due to be playing out of position.

  5. Shameful and disreputable to the league = Bruce has to go!!!

He tried to manage a defeat against his mate Moyes and today we saw just what a buffoon he is!

All NUFC fan’s want is an owner that cares and a Manager that is capable of Managing!!!

New owners just look at the games this season!
It’s been TERRIBLE to watch and without one player we would have been alongside Norwich.

It’s through luck and the lack on management that we find ourselves safe BUT don’t trust Bruce with any Money = ALL the places he’s been the players have only developed AFTER he’d been sacked!!!

    lovely

Kim – my uncle and his friend met him a few times. My uncle was a big fisherman and he and his mate were out one day years ago on the banks of some river catching nowt. The weather was **** and they stopped for a brew. They offered a cup to an old boy further up the bank which turned out to be Jack. They spent about an hour talking about Ireland and of course the WC.
A few weeks later they were on the same river & Jack turned up again and came over and thanked them again for the brew & buttie – and handed them a WC winners medal to look at. My uncle nearly fell in the river.

Jack outlived my uncle, but I know that those couple of meetings were some of the best memories he had. He was a real down to earth gentleman – cut from the same cloth as sir Bobby.

Kim – it’s certainly making Masters look like a mug now. He said he expected or hoped it would be resolved soon.
It’s as much the lack of communication that’s frustrating.

I’ve switched off from it this season now though. They’ve gone on holiday now they are safe. If they don’t care, I’m certainly not going to.

  9. I think we were foolish to give Carroll another contract and we should have stuck with Gayle instead.

I suspect Gayle and Muto May well be moved on in the summer – leaving Joelinton & Carroll and whoever they may bring in. Gayle is a far better finisher than both of those. He may not have the height, but his pace along with the pace of ASM & Miggy make it a very different attack.

It’s so frustrating not knowing what to hope for or expect in the transfer window.

  10. Sharpy, what a lovely story about your uncle, I’ve seen lots like that today about Jack. He really seems like a humble guy, down to earth .

On the takeover, i really cannot for the life of me see why it’s taking this long. Starting to think it will fizzle out now .
I cannot watch another season under that mans ownership, he has **** near sucked all of the fun out of being a fan.

Same difference, they were both ****), David James, Joe Hart of course. And now the giant arsed Mackem who shouldnt even be in the Everton first team.

Pickford will cost us a semi-final in the Euros or WC if Southgate keeps on picking him.

Dead right Stan, He is like some money making vampire, sucking every last drop life from our enjoyment. We do just enough to survive, sometimes not, but most seasons just enough.
I cannot fully get on board with enjoying our best players because i don’t expects us to keep them long enough to see them at their best because you just know the guy will cash in if he thinks the price is right.
I would love us to be genuinely competitive again and not live in fear of losing our best players or seeing local lads being tempted away because we simply have nothing to offer by way of ambition.

Eric – I said after the Bmth game that I would have taken Rose and Bentalab – considering the fees suggested is £5m and £8.5m respectively.

I still don’t think we’d be getting robbed when you think what £13.5m would usually get you.

We could defo get better than both. But I still think they’d be good squad players at that price.

I haven’t got a clue on Lazaro though. He does look a pacy, tricky player & took his goal well against Bmth – but the lad needs game time.
I’d probably make it a priority to look at him properly in the final few games.

Kim – I think Lascelles is a good Captain & I think his partnership with Fernandez has been strong in the main.

When Rose is motivated I think he’s a very good player. But I think that’s why Spurs are happy to let him go – he seems to lack the ability to self motivate for the ‘lesser’ games.

You never know what’s going on in the background with loan players. I’m sure his agent will be beavering away speaking to numerous club – and I’m pretty certain he’ll be speaking to Leicester as Chilwells replacement if he leaves them.

But it’s good to hear that Lascelles is doing his job on the pitch.

Maybe that was just politics but we have seen it happen with many other players. Saivet, Colback and Marceleno for us to name a few. Jack Rodwell. Do you remember Winston Bogart who sat in Chelsea’s reserves for 5 years.

I think I would take a pass on Rose.

Eric – there’s a number of Spurs players seeing their contracts out at Spurs to be fair to Rose so I do think there is more going on there than just Rose. If it was as you suggest, he could have sacked the loan off and just collected a wage at Spurs.

I fully expect him to replace Chilwell at Leicester if he moves on – and id be fine with that to be honest.

I suppose I’m thinking of either eventuality – if no takeover, then I expect little budget. Then £5m for Rose would be fine. If takeover, then I’d like to see us go get both the Norwich full backs – both very good young players who would grow with the squad.

Doesn’t mean he has no skills, he does, but he cheats.

Kim – I wouldn’t read too much into that particular exchange – they happen all the time. But it’s good to know Lascelles is dishing it out as the captain.

I’m not saying we really should be signing him, just that I could understand it for as little as £5m. I’m far more bothered about a CF than LB though.

  31. Spurs created some decent chances in the London Derby. They have better players than us and if they turn up we could be in for a long night. Brighton dominated at SJP and then of course there is Liverpool. I am not making a prediction of 5 losses to end the season but it is possible.

I had predicted 5 points total after the Bournemouth game and we will be lucky to get that. We have 4 on the board so far. Quite a few (not on here) were predicting top 10 and 50 points.

I really do hate to see us lose but if we lose 4 or 5 of the last 5 games it might make the pundits STFU about Bruce.

I scan a few other blog comments now and again and there are usually a couple of hundred comments on a Guardian match report. Funny thing is I hardly ever see anybody say Bruce deserves to stay. It is that the football has been dire, we have been lucky and Dubs has saved us about 10 points. I sometimes wonder which games the pundits watch.

The people who have supported the team for years and watch every game can see what is going on. It is almost unanimous. How can the pundits not see it? Is it really because they want their English mate to have the job? There is definitely a stick togetherness when it comes to British Managers and the punditocracy. You know, yer Moyes’s, Mr Roys and Big Fat Sams. They were even in Arrogant Alan’s camp for all of his time at NUFC.

I would say that their whole defense is next to useless but do we have the players down the middle to exploit this? Gayle on his day. Joelinton, no. Play Lazaro and have Miggy as the number 10?

Against Arsenal they had to play 2 holding players to protect that defense – Winks and Sissoko who is now a holding midfielder. Can we get at them though as they were very quick on the break and our defense has been wobbly at best in the last few games.

Spurs are vulnerable. The NL Derby should have been a draw and they drew against Bournemouth.

Kim – and that’s what’s disgusting about the decision. If UEFA had got it wrong then I’d have no issue with the overturning of the decision. But that’s not even the case – it’s that the courts thought the punishment wasn’t befitting. What’s the point in having the bloody rules then???.

£10m – that’s it??. How is that punishment for a club that can afford to break the **** rules!! … and the fine wasn’t for breaking the rules, it was for not playing ball in the investigation – so they have not been fined at all for breaking the rule!!.

It is like Trump and Roger Stone who was convicted of helping Russians and a whole lot more. He was sentenced to 7 years in Jail which Trump’s Justice Department reduced to 4. He is a convicted felon but Trump now says he wont go to jail, first using Corona Virus as an excuse and now saying at 74 it would be like a death sentence for Stone, There is no question that Trump will pardon him when he leaves office.

I bring this up because they are both examples of elites looking after their own and going against THEIR OWN LAWS.

But, it will help us if we get taken over by the Saudis as it has set a precedent and there is no way UEFA will intervene even if we spend half a billion over 2 years.

I would take the points on the board as the biggest indicator, even though that might be stating the obvious. But, West Ham play Watford on Friday. A draw probably makes them both safe. They will probably play out the whole game on the half way line.

The only spanner in the works I can see is Villa’s next game is away at Everton who have looked ****. A draw may not be enough though. I will be cheering for the Blue Bindippers even though they are of no consequence to me. Although, I do see some calls now for Pickford to lose his England place. I have been saying this for 2 years.

For those who think the football under Steve is dire ,does anyone remember Gordon Lee who came from Blackburn to replace Joe Harvey. He hated stars and sold Supermac to Arsenal bought Alan Gowling.Football was cronic .He only stayed about 18months He did get the team to the League cup final where Man City took the trophy. He was followed by Richard Dinnis and that is another tale all together.

  57. Stan, don’t worry mate, there are issues with the site at present so likely not down to you. Even if it is, it doesn’t matter we’ve all done it, well i have anyway.
Loved Supermac Stan, great player .

  58. Just read Martin Samuels piece on the Man City decision. He was spot on. He’s right, the top clubs want to pull the ladder up and not let other clubs compete with them. That’s why they’re so keen on FFP. He’s also right that Man City have few friends in the game because they smashed it to pieces and continue to do so. Maybe Newcastle and Man City will come together shortly as MBS and the King of Abu Dhabi are thought to be very close. If we are to attempt to get into the top echelons of football we will need some friends because there’ll be precious few of the established clubs that’s for sure.

  59. I see face masks are going to be compulsory indoors shortly. What a joke. Will there be any liberties left for us to hold on to after this is over?

Can’t we just say to people if you are vulnerable you need to do this, that or the other, if you are worried you should stay at home and if you’re neither just get on with your life. Why do we need to be forced to do things when it’s actually taking away all our liberties.

Why the ott actions for Covid?

Stuart this is an incredibly complicated situation that has been fcked up on both sides of the Atlantic. They are scrambling to find some way to catch up and open up the schools and economy. There is much more information out there now.

Face masks are not a civil liberties issue, they are a safety issue. If you can do something as simple as this to reduce the spread and deaths then why not do it. Are you against seat belts, motorcycle helmets, MOTs that reduce road accidents. How about smoking bans in bars that prevent second hand smoke? Maybe there should not be mandatory safety checks of elevators/lifts and people should ride at their own risk?

I think you are barking up the wrong tree railing against face masks.

  63. Stu: what happened over here was that there were initial hotspots in places like New York that had to act and got the virus under control. Other states with Trumpian Republican governors largely ignored the issue thinking it wouldnt happen to them. It was magical thinking following the advice of Trump himself. But there is a lot of travel between states like NY and CA, AZ and FL so it was inevitable there would be flare ups there and since they had no real plans to prevent the spread it has been like wildfire. Unfortunately that is where a lot of old people live. In nursing homes but also in retirement communities. Be prepared for dire news of deaths, even as treatment has gotten better.

if you have 100 80 year olds in a complex in FL and one persons nephew from NY comes in who is a carrier you can imagine what might happen.

It is an incredibly complex situation and if I lived in one of the hard hit states and was over 65 you can bet I would be self isolating. I wear a mask outside and to shop in Chicago where the positive testing rate is 2.6% compared to 30% in AZ.

  64. All of that said, I still think there will be more secondary deaths from closing the economy than primary deaths from CV-19. It is incredibly complicated. Wearing a mask is the easiest thing and the self isolation is to make sure Intensive Care Units are not overrun.

This should not be a political football but Trump has made it that way over here and now there is so much reactive talk on all sides you dont know what to believe. It is certainly not a HOAX though as some on the right say over here including our dear leader.
